There are some benefits to waking up at 4.30am. Orkney is frequently bright at night whether it's in the moonlight or the Aurora Borealis..although that changes as we enter a period of inactivity from the Sun.

Oo la la love Turner. First encountered when I was a teen, exploring all the art books in my school art department. Solace from an unpredictable home life, overwhelming beauty and depth anchored into the intangible forms. Succulent... consume it... love it.

Yet another review about Nolan's Odyssey but this one is different. American columnist Ezra Klein uses Nolan's film as a useful backdrop to reflect on the current state of his country via the archetype of the 'Trickster'. Brilliant! www.nytimes.com/2026/08/02/o...

The big trick of his “Odyssey” is smuggling the core of Judeo-Christian ethics into an ancient Greek epic.

The growing season is picking up in Orkney as the days begin to significantly stretch out. The polycrub is about to reach breakneck speed. The strawberries and nasturtiums are always the first back on the menu. The first strawberries are always massive! Doesn't negatively impact the flavours.

Centuries of Atlantic storms shaped Britains coastline, its culture, and now its energy strategy. It sits at the intersection of powerful prevailing winds and shallow coastal waters — a geographic lottery that makes it one of the best #offshorewind locations on Earth. #ActOnClimate

Frustrating consequence of the success of vaccinations is the limited first hand experience and absence of a big enough collective memory of a time before vaccines and just how bad it was. This great interactive infographic highlights the dangerous consequences of an unvaccinated society.

Reassuring. Admittedly I am limited in my understanding but it makes sense to decouple from a dominant USA platform when there is uncertainty in it's ability to provide transparency, compliant with European standards.

Wow! Introduced to Metropolis as part of our history and crit studies at art school, exciting to get a glimpse behind the curtain. Particularly evocative as it shrinks the distance between then and now, all via the simple action of sipping a cool drink. Love this.

This is fantastic news! Worked for the Clydesdales for about 15 years as a chef and spent a wee bit of time at the Chip. Phenomenal building all in but the mural always blew me away. When the job felt a bit too much, a stroll past the mural reminded me that there were better things to dwell on.

I really don't understand the political shortsightedness that seems to be the norm nowadays in cutting funding for science (and the arts). I know money is tight but they're attacking a source for long term growth in the hope of achieving an immediate, albeit a small saving.

What a day on Orkney! The sun finally graced us with a decent amount of exposure after months of nothing but the rare tantalising glimpse. I was so distracted I forgot to catch a photo! Here's some broccoli instead, harvested today from the polycrub. Great day in the garden!

"Red human against the geometry". Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej, Warszawa. 🎞️ Kodak Gold 200 📷 Canon AE-1 + FD 50mm f/1.4
A minimalist film photograph of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw on a snowy day. The building consists of two massive, white geometric blocks stacked atop one another. The top block has three horizontal windows, while the middle block has a single square window, creating a subtle "face" appearance. In the center of the ground-level entrance, a tiny figure in a bright red jacket stands perfectly centered, providing a sharp contrast to the muted white and gray tones. The photo has the warm, slightly grainy aesthetic of Kodak Gold 200 film.
