In the spirit of 19th- and 20th-century newspapers and literary magazines, Dinner Party, New York's flagship newsletter written by Emily Gould, is introducing something new but also old: serialized fiction.
"The Hater," an original six-part story by novelist and critic Lauren Oyler, will appear in the newsletter for six consecutive Fridays starting September 25. It's the story of a tall, self-absorbed, Berlin-dwelling writer named Lauren - a somewhat young, somewhat infamous writer - who has gotten herself in too deep with F., a frustrated academic turned book critic who she met on Feeld and who is trying to cheat on his wife. Despite these red flags (and a few others), Lauren becomes obsessed. An IRL meetup looms, with possibly disastrous, possibly amorous consequences. An uproariously funny auto-fictional take on dating, parasocial relationships, and the corrupting influence of apps on our social lives, "The Hater," is guaranteed to provoke strong reactions.
"When Emily asked if I'd be interested in writing a (long) short story in serial, like the good old days, I didn't really have to think about it at all, Oyler says. "Many people want to read fiction that reflects and responds to the time we're living in and that is published in a way that fits the time we're living in. I haven't had this much fun writing something in a long time."

Hello! I've been a very happy 1Password customer for many years. I've gotten my whole family on it, and convinced many friends and colleagues to use it and multiple employers to use it for their whole company. I really love the product and have never had any problems with it.
So 1 was extremely disappointed to see that you have chosen to support a project founded by and very closely associated with the white nationalist extremist David Heinemeier Hansson. It will be with the greatest reluctance that I migrate off 1Password, but I will have to if the only other option is for my money to fund anything associated with his hate and ethnic cleansing propaganda. I know you're trying to separate the project he founded and directs to build a linux distribution that works the way he wants it to from Hansson the person, but you simply cannot. It's his project, and in funding it you're supporting him. If I remain a customer, you'll be doing it with my money.

I truly hate to see 1Password choose this course, and I hope you'll reconsider. Please pass my message along to anyone who is in a position to advocate against this terrible decision. And thanks for making a great product! Please don't make me stop using it.

Later, in Greenland, Gudrid will marry Thorstein Eriksson, one of Erik's sons and Leif Eriksson's brother, who co-owned his homestead with an entirely different man who was also named Thorstein, making for an insanely confusing chapter six, in which Thorstein (Erik's son) dies and then Thorstein (no relation) hurriedly summons Gudrid back to the deathbed so that Thorstein (Erik's son again, recently deceased, as you'll recall) can briefly come back to life (???) to shame his countrymen for their insufficient Christian piety, reform Greenland Norse burial customs along more firmly Christian lines, deliver his last will and testament as to the distribution of his property, and then die again, apparently for good this time. After that the other Thorstein is never mentioned again, not once, so I submit that it would be perfectly reasonable for future translators to change his name to literally anything else. We're fighting for our lives out here reading this stuff, please have pity.
