I dunno. If that is Merlin, it's very strange he hasn't returned to visit you, Tim. Your place is near enough. Or maybe he's found someone who feeds him better than you did! (He looks chunkier.)

Chair arms have labels on them invisible to humans but perfectly legible to cats, The labels say things like: "scratching recommended" and "claw-sharpening material".

I was wondering the same. It's a decent match, although I'm trying to ignore the comfortable score. France are a bit average tonight.

I thought the pod missed an essential point, namely how the apps are supposed to know the age of an under-18 year old so that the app can, by default, make itself 'unavailable' during the curfew period? (The OSA does not require platforms to know the age of child users.)

Another elementary question: By what UK law is it possible to prosecute the consensual sending of a nude pic to an e-mail address?

Elementary question - What is the legal basis for outlawing a 16- or 17-year old consensually sending naughty pics to their girlfriend or boyfriend?

I think the Gov is split over the issue. That's why Kendall keeps saying, performatively, "We're going to do something, we haven't got a clue what it might be, but we are fully determined to do something".

These politicians are in the middle of a leadership battle. What they say about the possible u-16 SM ban cannot be given any credibility.

I was surprised, when, at the end of the consultation document, it announced a mere "Thank you" and did not offer me a copy of what I had submitted. Is the Gov planning to release the consultation 'results' in any form?

Although the Lords' amendments 37 and 38 failed, the Government had its own 'amendments in lieu' ready and these were passed - they had much the same draconian effect as the original Lords' amendments.

The repealing of the GDPR for 13- to 16-year olds feels like it could become very complicated (geographically), and at the very least will require age-gates at 13, 16 (and of course 18, for non-GPDR reasons)? VPNs for kids will become very sought after.

This secondary legislation (or only some of it?) is likely to appear under the Child Wellbeing & Schools Bill/Act. The rest might be left to more millions of words of Ofcom 'guidance'. How it all fits together is very unclear.
000
russ-e.bsky.social @russ-e.bsky.social · 02/03/2026
There's a complete disconnect between the level of detail in this consultation and the 'quick response' (i.e. no scrutiny) secondary legislation promised by Liz Kendall.
110
russ-e.bsky.social @russ-e.bsky.social · 02/03/2026
It's excessively complicated. Feels like it has been written by 57 Ofcom subcommittees. I can't see any reasonable and enforceable measures that could emerge from this. It's regulation on steroids. (But that's probably the intention...)

The debate over client-side scanning is never far from the surface. (New reqs nearly re-appeared in UK's Child Wellbeing & Schools Bill, but the amendment was not moved.) This is a long read, but a great summation of where we are in the murky history of EU Chatcontrol: mullvad.net/en/why-priva...

AV is proposed to apply to all 'regulated user-to-user services'. The U2U bit is as per OSA definition, but the 'regulated' qualification indicates a subset, i.e. those listed in secondary legislation. This allows Gov some flexibility without changing primary legislation. Downside is little scrutiny

I was surprised Yusuf droned on repeatedly about working class white boys on Newsnight. It was clearly an attempt at vote gathering. He did get himself into quite a mess. Perhaps no worse though than Labour's cynical ploy with its 'Islamophobia' (= new blasphemy law) definition!

I think the last GE voting was characterised by "how best can I get rid of the Tory Gov?". Similarly, next GE will be anti-Labour vote. i.e. the vote will be predominantly anti, rather than pro a particular party. Pollsters/pundits talk in terms of pro-this or pro-that. That narrative feels wrong.

It's difficult to tell how accurate the information on the operation of the Australian regime is as received by politicians in other juridictions (UK, France, Ireland, Spain etc) considering a similar ban. Many of these politicians will be influenced by the desires of their regulators.

Mainly the Dems, who take exception to the subject of the hearing because of the current imperative (in their view) on what is happening in Minnesota. The ACLU representative evades answering basic questions on the, e.g. the Biden regime censoring tweets. It's quite a bunfight, getting nowhere.
