Went to Sweetwater Creek State Park outside Atlanta today. It has neat ruins of an old mill. Beautiful day near the water.

Pretty cool view of Soybean harvest activity and how that spills into truckload markets.

Our goods baskets are much smaller than they were in Covid, coupled with higher profits, keeps this pass thru more muted than what is feared. It is nonetheless continuous as high energy prices cement into transportation budgets, pushing up costs further. Also pushing for further diversification.

Now that the flurry of data center projects go to hibernate and we mix in fuel shocks and tightening credit it would make sense to be keen on headwinds coming, but truckload tender volumes and inbound ocean containers. Nothing magical, but both moving over last year. No Q4 fallouts IMO.

As a business, transportation is terrible for any sense of float. It is reverse. So many costs come up front and need to clear well before invoicing clears. These transaction costs grow as you hit limits to even fill the tank.

Part of the problem with fuel inflation is that it pushes spot rates up. Spot carriers are paid all-in, meaning inclusive of fuel and moves faster than contract. That disparity puts pressure on the rest of the portfolio, the largest share of freight bills. Contract linehauls are now 9% higher YoY

Wild to watch the average length of haul collapse the last two years as short haul volumes dominate. CSTVI and SSTVI and < 250 mile runs.

The banks reporting lower truckload demand are seeing composition effects versus aggregate. They have legacy retail and manufacturing sectors that are as anemic as reporting suggests. AI capex just isn’t jamming the same channels. Miller’s ton-mile index shows the aggregated demand cycle spike.

We all know this ain’t happening. What’s worse is the packaging. What is the point of the tariffs for revenue generation if we’re giving it all back? And if so, in what capacity is it a dividend versus a refund? And we’re already refunding business with the same pool.

Woah, Richard Baldwin, Professor of Economics at MIT shows the silent retreat of tariff impacts vs the bluster shown some the Supreme Court ruling. Most eye opening is about the 50% rates imposed on Canada actually impacting 5% of sales. Less than 1% of total US. www.linkedin.com/pulse/how-am...

This may be a real time experiment in labor and prices using automation. The first is externalities for labor we don’t see yet, like machine maintenance. These jobs will not equal prior driver numbers but they exist outside the idea you just cut labor costs because the drivers are out.
Story shared about Lyft drivers now cleaning out Waymos as driving automates.

I wrote about trade imbalances and how the American service industry accounts for the highest value in goods sold. You can may mftg more but there goes marketing and pricing. Now it’s harder to sell what you make. You get the gist. Snips below the link. runningsignal.beehiiv.com/p/the-global...
