I made a picture to help people pick the best playtest or UX research method:

Playtest method cheat sheet. It asks about whether you are interested in measuring or understanding, and whether you’re interested in behaviours or opinions. Then it recommends a method for some popular research methods. The games user research website has a full written guide to it
