Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Our ICOP-L2 panel on respecifying and exploring engagement (especially in second language use or learning contexts) from an EMCA perspective came together quite well. Now to start shopping it as a special issue. 030
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 20/08/2026My students and I have been able to download the audio/video files recently with no problem. I haven't tried the actual CLAN/CHAT files in a long time (I just copy, paste, and revise the transcriptions), so don't know about those. 110
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 24/07/2026Did a little #EMCA something for the university's in-house journal. Nothing spectacular but may be of interest to some. nanzan-u.repo.nii.ac.jp/records/2002... Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 17/06/2026Finally got my copy. It's wild to have a chapter among these folks - equal parts "wow, cool" and "how the hell did I manage this?" 030
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 07/06/2026I think what I was thinking of was a "CA-adjacent" paper by S. Iwasaki (1997) on what he called a "loop sequence". For some reason, I'd never come across the term "topic attrition", but I'll take a look. Thanks. 100
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 07/06/2026I just realized I must be thinking of Iwasaki's "Loop Sequence" paper. 010
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 07/06/2026I was digging through Schegloff '07 in that area and didn't find the repeated "yeah" thing. I'll need to look at the Mushin & Gardner stuff again for them. I'm encouraging this student to really dig into Gardner 2001 for what she's working on, as well as Schegloff '07 Ch. 7. 000
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 07/06/2026One of my undergrads is using the CallFriend corpus looking at Mandarin, and in one spot the participants produce multiple minimal 嗯 to get out of a sequence but before moving into the next one. And I want to point her in the right direction but seem to have lost the neurons that info used to be on. 000
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 07/06/2026Need some memory help from the #EMCA folks. I know there is a paper/chapter about the space after a sequence where participants may repeat "yeah" or "hm hmm" multiple times before moving into the next sequence. But I can't find it and nothing pops up in my searches. I'm not imagining it, right? 341
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 30/05/2026One student added to her notes "Requests are like exercise. For the heavy ones, you can't just jump into them, you have to prepare." Awesome! 020
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 30/05/2026#EMCA Had to do a lecture about my field to our whole 1st year cohort this week, and instead of having them do "reaction papers" (2/3 of which end up being AI every time), I had them turn lecture notes showing their responses to questions and quick analyses of request sequences. 120
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 20/05/2026Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - "Just to See Her"... wai'? my neck hurts. Booker T. and the MGs - "Booker Loo"... cool. groovin Ella Fitzgerald - "Solitude"... ooh, too mellow right now. Rancid - "Tropical London"... k. Hi-Standard - "Mosh Under the Rainbow." Got it. It'll be that kind of day. 000
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 20/05/2026This morning's musical whiplash, courtesy of my media player's shuffle: Josh Tillman - "Master's House"... mellow. Killswitch Engage - "A Bid Farewell"... wai'? wasn't expecting that. Poison Idea - "Humanity"... okay, getting where i need to be 100
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 19/05/2026I just deleted it completely and re-added it manually. Don't know whether that'll do anything... 000
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 19/05/2026yeah, it's definitely their AI, and the fact that there is now no human who one can contact to take care of its stupid mistakes. 000
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 19/05/2026I've got a chapter coming out in a Routledge handbook, but it isn't out yet. Google Scholar already has two citations for it, one dated 2024 and the other 2013(!). Neither mention me or my field anywhere. Anyone know how to get rid of them? Nothing I'm finding online helps. 300
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 08/05/2026Awesome. Thanks! BTW, one other student wants to look at coaching and another at sports announcing, so your work is getting recommended a bunch. 120
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 08/05/2026#EMCA hive mind Does anyone know of any research on parliamentary interaction (i.e. UK, etc... PM vs opposition MP type discussion)? I could have sworn I'd read some, but can't seem to find it. Two of my students are interested in comparing Japanese PM/MP debates with other contexts. 601
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 25/04/2026Got a new toy for under 1000円 (less than $10). Looks a little worn, but plays well. I've been wanting to explore one of these for awhile. 010
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 24/04/2026So when I entered the room, I said to the TA "イチ・イチ・キューじゃなくて、イチ・イチ・ルーになった." ["It's not ichi ichi kyuu, it's become ichi ichi rue," with ichi ichi kyuu (119) being the emergency number]. Strangely the kids actually seemed to think it was funny, or just funny enough to humor me. 230
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 24/04/2026Sometimes a dad joke/オヤジギャグ lands in the right way. A couple students just came to ask if I could go to our TA space to answer some questions about their homework, saying it was an emergency. 100
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 10/04/2026No lie detected here... (and one of the downsides of reviewing abstracts regularly) 030
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 27/03/2026The last part being key, especially after listening to and analyzing so much bs. Theoretically though, emically, is jargon still "jargon" to those who understand it and use it unproblematically on a mundane basis? 110
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 27/03/2026There must be a good way to research this within an #EMCA/#DiscursivePscychology framework... And not just in the business world, but of course within the academic world as well, maybe building off of Billig's "writing badly". 270
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 18/03/2026The only real data we seemed to have gotten out of it was being able to see how the kids figured things out and explored the environment. Almost nothing useful about the language use, and certainly nothing about the benefits of the platform for learning. (4/4) 011
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 18/03/2026Problem ended up being that the calibration of the headset for a JHS girl sitting down was done by a 190cm tall man standing up. So when she got into the "plane", she found herself looking up at her VR body, while her own perspective was from the aisle floor. Kid seriously freaked out. (3/4) 110
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 18/03/2026There was a VR role play where the kids were passengers on a plane interacting with flight staff (played by employees of the English village). Before the whole thing, of course, the equipment had to be calibrated. (2/4) 110
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 18/03/2026During COVID, the English Village institution in Tokyo that was allowing us to gather data launched a VR side as well. We were able to get some JHS kids to participate and one of the weirdest things happened.... (1/4) 110
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 06/03/2026Seriously? Sounds like a perfect opportunity for a lawsuit. 000
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 22/02/2026The camera that we moved was a small handheld just for portability. Ended up not using that data as much since little interaction happened off camera (just picking up ingredients and washing hands). Stability, connectivity, and detail were the key factors for us. 110
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 22/02/2026The main cameras were camcorders (4k JVCs) that we got for their good rep for detail and quality. We needed to be able to capture detailed movements and facial expressions (esp. through masks - COVID times), and they had inputs for external mics, which made it easier when mixing the vids and audio 110
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 22/02/2026I recorded cooking classes. 3 steady cameras at different angles (I called them N, E, and SW based on their placement in the room), each with RØDE wearable wireless mics on all participants, and one handheld camera to follow when they had to move out of the scene. Extra voice recorders for backup. 100

Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 16/02/2026Rubio said "we in America have no interest in being polite and orderly caretakers of the West’s managed decline". Yeah. You're clearly being as disrespectful and destructive as possible. And you sure ain't "caretaking" shit... you're pushing everything positive about our alliances off a cliff. 020
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 29/01/2026Sad to hear that Deborah Cameron has passed (at a rather young age at that). She was highly influential in the field of sociolinguistics and discourse analysis, and was one of the first people I read early on who helped draw attention to criticality in discourse. www.theguardian.com/education/20...theguardian.comDeborah Cameron obituaryLinguist, feminist activist and author of influential books on how language can shape gendered experiences 052
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 24/01/2026This wasn't the first Dylan song I learned as a kid (Blowing in the Wind), and it wasn't my favorite (My Back Pages), but it was the first to really make an impact on me for some reason. 000
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 24/01/2026A cover of Bob Dylan's "She Belongs to Me". Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 21/01/2026Thanks! That one has been sitting in my "to read" folder for the project for awhile, but I haven't quite reached it yet. 010
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 21/01/2026Just wanted to see what folks thought. I'm digging through the deontics lit right now (and just came across Stivers & Rossano 2010 - I'm embarrassingly late to find that one!), but the attentiveness aspect is still causing me issues on the project I'm working on. 100
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 21/01/2026Or how about a significant other giving minimal continuers during a story (but while turn-taking has been suspended for the story, so no substantive response is actually due)? Are continuers, newsmarkers, assessments and the like *conditionally relevant*? Does some other norm make this accountable? 100
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 21/01/2026But how about the student fiddling with their phone while a teacher talks (but not necessarily asking questions)? Is embodied attentiveness considered to be *conditionally relevant*? Or is this a matter of deontics - a teacher can command (heh heh, as if!) attention by dint of the relational pair? 100
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 21/01/2026Part of this has to do with conditional relevance - if a conditionally relevant response doesn't come up in a timely manner, that's accountable. And this is perhaps the easiest way for a participant to determine whether someone is paying attention. 100
