Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Our ICOP-L2 panel on respecifying and exploring engagement (especially in second language use or learning contexts) from an EMCA perspective came together quite well. Now to start shopping it as a special issue. 030
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 24/07/2026Did a little #EMCA something for the university's in-house journal. Nothing spectacular but may be of interest to some. nanzan-u.repo.nii.ac.jp/records/2002... Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 17/06/2026Finally got my copy. It's wild to have a chapter among these folks - equal parts "wow, cool" and "how the hell did I manage this?" 030
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 07/06/2026Need some memory help from the #EMCA folks. I know there is a paper/chapter about the space after a sequence where participants may repeat "yeah" or "hm hmm" multiple times before moving into the next sequence. But I can't find it and nothing pops up in my searches. I'm not imagining it, right? 341
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 30/05/2026#EMCA Had to do a lecture about my field to our whole 1st year cohort this week, and instead of having them do "reaction papers" (2/3 of which end up being AI every time), I had them turn lecture notes showing their responses to questions and quick analyses of request sequences. 120
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 20/05/2026This morning's musical whiplash, courtesy of my media player's shuffle: Josh Tillman - "Master's House"... mellow. Killswitch Engage - "A Bid Farewell"... wai'? wasn't expecting that. Poison Idea - "Humanity"... okay, getting where i need to be 100
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 19/05/2026I've got a chapter coming out in a Routledge handbook, but it isn't out yet. Google Scholar already has two citations for it, one dated 2024 and the other 2013(!). Neither mention me or my field anywhere. Anyone know how to get rid of them? Nothing I'm finding online helps. 300
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 08/05/2026#EMCA hive mind Does anyone know of any research on parliamentary interaction (i.e. UK, etc... PM vs opposition MP type discussion)? I could have sworn I'd read some, but can't seem to find it. Two of my students are interested in comparing Japanese PM/MP debates with other contexts. 601
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 25/04/2026Got a new toy for under 1000円 (less than $10). Looks a little worn, but plays well. I've been wanting to explore one of these for awhile. 010
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 24/04/2026Sometimes a dad joke/オヤジギャグ lands in the right way. A couple students just came to ask if I could go to our TA space to answer some questions about their homework, saying it was an emergency. 100
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 10/04/2026No lie detected here... (and one of the downsides of reviewing abstracts regularly) 030
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 27/03/2026There must be a good way to research this within an #EMCA/#DiscursivePscychology framework... And not just in the business world, but of course within the academic world as well, maybe building off of Billig's "writing badly". 270

Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 16/02/2026Rubio said "we in America have no interest in being polite and orderly caretakers of the West’s managed decline". Yeah. You're clearly being as disrespectful and destructive as possible. And you sure ain't "caretaking" shit... you're pushing everything positive about our alliances off a cliff. 020
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 29/01/2026Sad to hear that Deborah Cameron has passed (at a rather young age at that). Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 21/01/2026Reaching out to #EMCA folks. I'm trying to work my head around an issue: the accountability of attentiveness. I've yet to find a source specifically about this, but some bits and pieces are starting to come together. 100

Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 17/12/2025Something I've never noticed before but *seems* to be a positive(?) move: Native American reservations are now listed on Google Maps. I'm curious what people (particularly people who actually have a stake in this representation) feel about it. 000
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 02/12/2025I introduced my 4th year student who is using MCA to analyze discourse surrounding DEI to Jack Bilmes' occasioned semantics and taxonomy work, and she immediately started applying his way of visualizing the ideas to her thesis. Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 04/11/2025When research is largely written by AI, only to be read by AI, what "new knowledge" will actually mean anything? And will the effect that has on the publish or perish paradigm be a positive or negative thing? 030
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 06/10/2025This looks like it will be good, and something I'll need to share with my students. 020
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 04/10/2025#EMCA One of my 2nd year students mentioned in her homework about how she tried out a breaching experiment (in this case speaking in honorifics with her sister) and the reaction, and started diving deeper into the ideas. Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 22/09/2025Been listening to Fugazi's discography the last couple days, 1st time in a decade. Somehow it hits different than before. Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 16/09/2025there was a lynching on a college campus in Mississippi, but as of yet no major news outlet has picked up on the story because they are so far up a celebrity's ass that they can't recognize America's worst type of political violence that has been happening throughout the nation's history. 100
Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 14/09/2025Another original - "Lambchop's Got Lead Poisoning". Been working on it for a few weeks, but unfortunately, it keeps being timely. Rue @rue-burch.bsky.social · 14/09/2025A new original song I'm calling "Silly Cliches About Silly Cliches".
