It's a really good example of a successful noir melodrama, cagey, duplicitous and vaguely disorienting the first time it's seen. The shading and nuances are all there of course but grab the attention more on subsequent viewings.

All of the movies they made together were very good, although A Lion Is in the Streets is weaker. Even that has its moments though and its core theme about lying chiselers in positions of power is as apt as ever, maybe more so.

Yes, hearing about cuts always creates a bit of regret. That said, I don't reckon those mentioned are ruinous - the tension between Leighton/Dunnock and Mazurki/Strode remains, and I'd say remains understandable, even if some context is missing. And I like that scene of the red skyline as it stands.
