@clrnance.bsky.social and Sam Kirkham did something like this! I have a few papers using functional data analytic methods to model spectral shape in stop releases -- I'm a big proponent of this precisely to avoid imposing whatever's captured in pre-fab toolkits to spectra we don't yet understand

reapeR can also return other goodies, such as frame-wise probabilities of voicing onset/offset, and "pseudo-probability" of voicing in any frame 3/6

Simply pass the name of a sound file, and get an estimate of pitch and the locations of epochs (glottal closure instants). Alternatively, pass the name of a directory, and get estimates from every sound file in there 2/6

The upshot: CF0 effects are larger and more extensive in *global* high pitch environments, especially when there are no strict phonological demands in terms of pitch trajectory. In *local* high pitch environments with specific phonological demands in terms of trajectory, the opposite holds. 4/6

We were also particularly interested in how CF0 interacts with other sources of pitch raising, so we looked at effects in high/low global pitch contexts, in words with and without stød (iykyk), and in two varieties that differ in their stress-pitch alignment 3/6

praatpicture has a couple new features in the newly released version 1.8.0! You can now embed audio with a moving cursor to your figures (thanks Marina Cantarutti, and thanks to @sorensorensen.bsky.social for donating his voice!) 1/3

Fun fact, the name Ladefoged is Danish. It's notoriously difficult to pronounce in Danish, because the 2nd and 4th syllables are both "soft d's", the bizarre outcome of a historical /d/-vocalization process. 1/2

I had this sort of thing in my dissertation which was done with tikz. Looks like delinking was just a small = placed in the middle of the line, not super elegant but got the job done

Mainly, you can now easily plot ERB and Mel scaled spectrograms and spectra. This something that I didn't know a nice way of doing before but came in handy when teaching the difference between 'physicalist' and 'perceptualist' (?) scales. Hope this can be useful to others too!

Does anyone have any insights as to why labiodental trills are *not* greyed out in the IPA chart? Henton brings it up as an example of an impossible sound in a 1987 discussion paper that precedes the Greyboi™, but as far as I can tell it's never been greyed out.

Additionally, you can now control the range of the y-axis when plotting waveforms, fx to ensure that multiple channels share the same range for easier comparison. (Thanks to @susfuchs.bsky.social for suggesting this!)

💥praatpicture 1.6.2 now on CRAN 💥 The main new feature is that there's now a function to draw spectral slices

Rasmus Puggaard-Rode @rpuggaardrode.bsky.social · 31/07/2025
Plotting your spectral slices in R will soon be a lot easier!

Rasmus Puggaard-Rode @rpuggaardrode.bsky.social · 11/07/2025
Another minor change is that you can now control how many digits to print along the y-axis of waveforms (or suppress it entirely), and the center no longer says 0.000 but just 0 which is a lot nicer!

In sunny news, praatpicture version 1.5.0 is now on CRAN 🌞🧨 and you can now finally overlay pitch and intensity on the waveform (thanks to @jannelorenzen.bsky.social for suggesting this)

Very exciting news for PraatSauce users! We've just pushed a new version which fully rewrites the code base, making things faster and simpler to use. Instead of settings parameters in a bunch of Praat windows, you now set them in a spreadsheet file that looks like this github.com/kirbyj/praat...

There are also signal-specific arguments for making just the pitch, or formant contour, or whatever stand out. This is also implemented in the Shiny app. Have fun plotting! (3/3)

The main new thing is the 'highlight' argument for making portions of signals stand out with a different color, point size, or similar. This can be done by specifying exact times or by matching labels in a TextGrid (2/3)
