Illustrated New Yorker cover showing a busy playground scene. Two women, apparently caregivers, watch children playing: one stands holding a pink scooter while another sits on a bench with a toddler on her lap and holds up a phone showing a man on a video call. Children play on playground equipment around them, surrounded by lush green trees. The cover is dated 9 September 2024 and illustrated by Kikuo Johnson.

@theguardian.com is silencing criticism against his role in the public lynching of PROF JAYSON ARDAY. We won't be silenced. We didn't have much hope in The Times, The Spectator and and other right wing pamphleteers, but The Guardian? (1/2)
@guardian has apparently just discovered that comments can be turned off ‘in the interest of safeguarding individual contributors’ 🤡🤡🤡

So where was this concern for safeguarding when you received emails and messages warning you about Prof Jason Arday’s mental state? Where was your consideration of vulnerability, proportionality and foreseeable harm then?

This contradiction tells us something about the burden placed on Black people in a white world. We are expected to safeguard ourselves against institutions that refuse to safeguard us. We must anticipate the violence, manage its consequences, remain composed while experiencing it and then produce enough evidence of our suffering to persuade others that the harm is real. Even then, our vulnerability can be treated as irrelevant, manipulative or less important than an institution’s supposed right to ‘ask questions’.

Prof Arday was expected to withstand public scrutiny, suspicion and humiliation while remaining endlessly available to explain himself. Yet the moment Guardian journalists face criticism, the institution immediately recognises vulnerability, draws a boundary and calls it safeguarding. Protection becomes imaginable when their own people need it.

This is how racial power works: not simply through openly racist language, but through the unequal distribution of care, credibility and protection. White institutions reserve for themselves the right to be vulnerable, while Black people are expected to absorb the harm they produce.

You cannot invoke safeguarding to protect your journalists while refusing to reckon honestly with the harm your journalism helped produce. And you cannot hide behind the right-wing press as though being less vicious somehow makes your own conduct responsible.

This editorial is not accountability. It is institutional self-exoneration. Prof Arday deserved the same care you are now extending to yourselves.
