This is a jump scare moment you have captured here @alanbriscoe.bsky.social. I certainly remember it well from both early 70s broadcasts of Timeslip. The scariest bit for me though was the death of Edith Joynton in the 'Ice Box'.

An unnerving moment for Liz Skinner (Cheryl Burfield) as she meets her mannequin in the opening episode of the final Timeslip serial "The Day of the Clone" (1971).

I remember the TVS repeats, mainly shown shortly after midnight on Thursdays going into the early hours of Friday mornings. Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) filled a similar slot on Monday nights. Both shows were really popular with viewers and as a result they called in some special guests.

Back in the early 70s Southern TV was one of the best regions in terms of the first broadcasts of UFO so maybe its successor TVS was maintaining that record. I think the 80s repeats were very popular there as this video might attest: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gytn...

I suppose I was very fortunate. My local ITV back then was TVS. They did the entire run of UFO in one go beginning in April 1988 & I recorded them all. There was no need for me to buy any of the sell through tapes & so I passed on them.

I certainly had the first video. It was trememdous to be able to rewatch episodes at any time. Also hugely important for me was reading (avidly!) about the series and episodes in magazines such as Century 21 & back issues of SIG I picked up in the early 90s plus Fanderson mags a little later.

I'm not sure how many of the later video releases (better cover designs I feel) I picked up - I may have reserved them for the episodes that hadn't been released earlier because they made up part of the Invasion: UFO "film". "The Man Who Came Back" I think I first saw via a recording from Bravo.

Everybody's entry point for viewing these ITC shows is different, & always interesting. Your first experience tells of how necessary the sell-through video market was to introduce new viewers to a then 23-year-old TV series. Was your tape one of these @alanbriscoe.bsky.social ?

I was too young to see any late-night broadcasts in the 1970s. I first saw it on the VHS release in 1993 & it's always been a huge favourite. In production terms it's where the style of the show really changes and moves into overdrive. Writer / director David Tomblin takes a lot of credit for this.

There were no ITV compliance issues restricting 'The Cat With Ten Lives' for the 80s repurchase (HTV broadcast it at 11am on a Saturday), though Granada may have decided to restrict it locally. It's most likely that it was burning off remaining episodes in the then new through the night TV hours.

I didn't even know that Granada had repeated "The Cat With Ten Lives" on 21st July 1988. This listing might explain why and it makes a 12.15 am screening seem positively early! Maybe it also suggests that even in 1988 this was seen as a "sensitive" episode unsuitable for daytime screening...

Lucky Granada viewers. 'The Cat With Ten Lives' was only ever broadcast once in the LWT area, in 1972. The next time I saw it, was during a home cinema session around 1979, when someone from @fanderson1981.bsky.social circles showed me a cut down version on Super 8mm film. It was brilliant!

OTD 50 years ago (17 September 1976) UFO received its last 1970s broadcast on Granada with a post-midnight "The Cat With Ten Lives", one of those reserved for late-night screenings. Repeats in some regions such as LWT continued into 1977, the series not to return to ITV until around 10 years later.

Great article! Like Samira, I used to watch Saturday mornings on LWT on my own too. Though I could also get snowy reception of Anglia, so I would see many of theirs on Sunday afternoons. Then school holidays spent in ATV-land, I'd catch it on a Sunday lunchtime. Happy days & happy Breakaway day! ☺️

It's good to hear you're enjoing it, & also nice that we are actually able to catch up with some of these programmes many years on. I hugely enjoyed the BBC series 'Buccaneer', shown by @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social recently. It had passed me by in 1980 & am very grateful I caught it this time.

Probably due to its Sunday afternoon slot, I didn't see 'A Place to Hide' (nor its weekday repeat a couple of years later) and Network unusually didn't get beyond Ep 1 on the 'Look-Back' sampler DVDs. Up to Ep 4 now (one a night on weekdays, Ep 5 tonight!) and hugely enjoying it.

I'm missing many of these Network releases, the serials I never saw at the time. 'Fly into Danger' I saw originally & I have enjoyed the DVD. 'Jamie' I remember was about magic carpets, & had Aubrey Morris as a Mr Zed? Jamie himself I think might have been the laddy from The Amazing Mr Blunden?

One of my favourites Ros. An appearance of Stefan Gryff as a barber. The same year, he played the wonderful Captain Krasakis in The Lotus Eaters and played different characters in Michael Bird’s next two adaptations. Brilliant 70’s tv.

The DVDs are out for my #VanDerValk viewing which continues tonight with 'Rich Man, Poor Man'. TVT is the ATV/Midlands edition from Wed 3rd October 1973. The TVM at 11pm is one I remember seeing on Thames in an early evening timeslot, 'Death Takes a Holiday' starring Yvette Mimieux & Monte Markham.

One of the things I find interesting in my own archive viewing is sometimes I see the same actor in two different shows on the same night and quite unplanned. Depending on what you watch certain actors seem to crop up time and again in many different shows.

My DVD viewing tonight takes me back to 9pm on Wed 26/09/73. Barry Foster who plays #VanDerValk appears again in the Thames region at 11.30pm in an Edgar Wallace mystery (see London TVT below), in which he also plays a policeman.

'Spell of Evil', another brilliant watch. Much I remember of it from 1973. Clara's bouffant hair, outrageous apparel & bling. The ugly polystyrene ashtray with the toy car, the effigy, the old drawing, & of course the burning. The supernatural ones always stick in the mind. #BrianClemensThriller

Perhaps it's the nature of archive TV that it almost seems to freeze in time the actors we see in screen. We can forget that 50 years have passed and even the young adults of the 1970s are now well into old age. A fair number are still with us but unfortunately a dwindling number as time passes.

Oh dear, we've lost another one. I remember her mainly for her role as schoolteacher turned spy Jane Walker in Tightrope. Her part in the #BrianClemensThriller 'The Next Voice You See' was important though as you say. 89 is a good age. RIP Marian.

In the "End of an Era" episode (1973) of sitcom Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? Bob says he is feeling "blind terror" which Terry notes is a film starring Mia Farrow. Blind Terror (1971) was penned by Brian Clemens & one of the films that set the scene for his series Thriller.

"We might just as well be helpless babies". That line always rings out loud to me. However the seven blind students here, with their other senses heightened beyond that of sighted people, prove that they are anything but. #BrianClemensThriller
