Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 02/07/2026Despite a 154% increase in vehicle trips, violence eliminated 110 million daily intermunicipal trips (49% highway traffic in 2015). We identify this effect using changes in number of drug trafficking organisations as instrument for homicide rates. 100
Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 02/07/2026Using network analysis, Michele also compared changes in daily vehicle traffic flows on Mexico’s federal highways in 2005 and 2015. This allowed us to analyse how the complex network of vehicle trips in the entire country changed🚗 100
Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 02/07/2026We instrumented homicide rates using changes in fuel prices & municipal distance to fuel pipelines, factors driving violence from gasoline theft. Rising violence led to stronger emigration networks, 1.12 million additional domestic emigrants, 50,200 fewer returnees from the US during 2005-2020. 100
Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 02/07/2026Michele used the Noise-Corrected approach he developed with Frank Neffke to quantify extent to which each municipality's migration network was changing, taking into account the multiple migration flows each municipality sends and receives from the rest of the country and abroad. 100

Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 13/05/2026Takeaway: Violence acts as a spatial friction. It concentrates activity in safer hubs while peripheralising violent areas. Thus, responses to criminal violence should consider their general-equilibrium spatial effects. 011
Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 13/05/2026Analysing daily traffic in highways 2005 vs 2015, violence also affected regional connectivity. Despite a 154% rise in national traffic, rising homicides eliminated ~110M daily intermunicipal trips connecting violent areas to the rest of the country. 100
Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 13/05/2026But net flows miss the full story. Across 6M+ migration links across municipalities, violence strengthened emigration networks, people fled to a wider range of destinations. 100
Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 13/05/2026Identification: we instrument homicide rates using fuel price changes × distance to pipelines. As prices rose, cartels expanded into fuel theft, fighting violently over fixed pipeline routes, an exogenous shock. 120
Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 13/05/2026Rising homicide rates caused ~1.12M extra domestic emigrants & kept 50,200 Mexicans from returning from the US. That's nearly 6% of all domestic emigration, attributable to violence alone. 110
Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 13/05/2026How does violence reshape migration? Using 🇲🇽 census data 2005–2020 and network analysis across 6M+ migration links, we show violence drove displacement and reduced 🚗 highway traffic linking violent municipalities to the rest of the country www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1... 120

Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 21/07/2025This is one of many reasons I’ve refused, for decades, to accept performative diversity roles. Being a brown migrant woman does not make me uniquely qualified to fix institutional failures rooted in centuries of neglect. 000
Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 21/07/2025Minorities in academia are expected to overperform, stay silent, and endure stereotypes (e.g, you don’t know how to write, are poorly educated). This is a minority tax: taking extra unpaid labour and diversity duties that don't count towards promotion. bmcmededuc.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.... 100

Roxana Gutiérrez-Romero @roxanagutz.bsky.social · 11/07/2025Astronomers had noisy observations of comet positions and needed to estimate their orbits, like ellipses or parabolas. But errors made this tricky. In 1805, Legendre introduced least squares to find the orbit that best fit the data by minimizing squared errors. 000
