A sign in front of the basket explains: Thrummed Mittens (or fleece-stuffed mittens) originate in Newfoundland and Labrador. Twisted bits of unspun, carded fleece wool are knitted in to the fabric to create a fleecy lining. With wear and use, the fleece inside felts into an insulating layer. Traditionally, they are knit of wool in natural colors, however the pattern created by the thrum looks particularly striking with hand dyed fleece.

Random Passage is one of our favorite to spots to visit. Built for a mini-series, it shows what life was like here in the early 1800s. There are interesting guided tours given by local people. There's a tea & giftshop too (wheelchair accessible via back) #BonavistaPeninsula#Newfoundland #History

Layla & her family arrived here in Newfoundland last fall after living in a refugee camp in Iraq for 10 years. Layla learned how to sew there, and do all kinds of needlework. She's selling her original handmade creations at our Gallery & Gift Shop. #BonavistaPeninsula #SyrianRefugees #KurdishArt

Knit purses, all different colors with unique decorations - like crocheted flowers, tassels, displayed on a table. In front are 2 signs. One says Layla's, and the other says: Layla's Story - Layla was born in Syria and living in beautiful Damascus City when the conflict in Syria began. She and her husband fled north, but the war reached them there too. They fled again to a refugee camp in Iraqi Kurdistan with their baby daughter. Their son was born not long after they arrived and they lived there for almost 10 years. Layla and her husband Mohammed, and their children Sandra and Masoud, arrived in Newfoundland in September 2024. Layla spends a lot of her time sewing and crocheting, which she learned in classes in the refugee camp. We received a generous donation of bins full of material and she's putting it all to good use. She designs her own patterns for crochet and knitting projects and for sewing clothes, too.

5 years ago we read a post something like ... "Where would you like me to change my teenage daughter - on your bathroom floor? Where are your adult change tables!" We set about adapting our Public Washrooms right away and we now have 2 adult change table stalls. #Accessibility #Newfoundland

Inside the washroom stall is a dark leather-covered long change table with a shelf under it holding supplies (toilet paper, disinfetant, wipes, cloths), a waste can and a toilet. There is a grab bar above the toilet and one to the side, above the toilet paper. There are 2 pieces of abstract metal art on the wall.
