The former PM’s new book might have a point about cooperation, but it’s both turgid and naive ✏️ @rostaylor.bsky.social

I wish Gordon Brown’s new book were not so dull. But a couple of heartfelt passages aside, I’m afraid it is. And given what a clever, experienced man he is, that’s an awful pity. www.thenewworld.co.uk/ros-taylor-g...

But it goes beyond bad prose. GB is arguing that people who feel connected to their communities trust elites more. Then he explains what the elites should do in NGO-jargon. You might as well say: leave the big stuff to us, guys, you wouldn't get it. This was one reason Britain voted Leave.

No one should publish prose like this, especially in a book aimed at the general reader. Why, Gordon? Why?

Writing about a multilateral charter of principles: “These themes recur in the Pact for the Future, which recognises that interdependence structured around extraction and asymmetric adjustment undermines legitimacy, whereas reciprocity transforms interdependence into partnership.”

The Future Starts With Us tries hard to move from the particular to geopolitics, but the leap between a football ground in Kirkcaldy and the World Health Organisation is too wide to breach.

The scope is broad. Too broad. ‘A requirement to ensure equity between regions and nations should be part of every country’s constitution.’ Should it? What sort of equity? Who would enforce it, and how? The intention is good. The details are lacking.

Unfortunately, like, I don’t know, the results of a charity fundraiser for the Kurds, the Tory claims for what they’re proposing grew a little in the telling. Newspapers everywhere were calling it a British “Iron Dome”, referring to Israel’s comprehensive – and expensive – system.

Nick Ferrari of LBC, a man who is to political weakness what Godzilla is to a Tokyo suburb, was doubtful that it would be possible to build a missile defence network that would defend the whole UK. “Well, because it’s mobile, it can,” Badenoch said, faltering slightly.

The LBC man closed in. “Is it moved by sea? By land? By air?”

“I do know that it would move,” the Conservative leader said. “I think certainly by sea.” She tried to explain. “It’s not one thing that’s sitting in one place.”

Ferrari wouldn’t let go. “How many units are there?” If the Daily Star’s barrister had been this good, Archer’s political career might have ended in 1987.

“How many units?” Badenoch repeated. “I can’t…” She resorted to

Good piece fm @rostaylor.bsky.social. Full-throated, all-in campaign by a convincing PM might get us in (tho next PM cd still reverse out); but the trench-warfare approach to negotiations (no to the euro, no to Schengen, yes to opt-outs for the City etc) wdn't energise voters here & wd alienate EU.

New piece for @boelleu.bsky.social Since rejoining the single market means freedom of movement, you might as well just rejoin. But Burnham needs to work out how to make the case for it. And he just hates talking about immigration. eu.boell.org/en/2026/10/0...

Appealing in principle, but it depends how big and comfortable you want your conference to be. Blackpool was great if you were in the Hilton. If you were in a run-down hotel miles up the seafront, not so much. And these places take longer to get to: I flew (Guardian's choice) to Blackpool!
