It's a great TV season right now in the UK. We're in the midst of The Celebrity Traitors, Taskmaster, Ludwig and Ted Lasso. However, as well as Ted Lasso I'm also catching up on S3 of Colin from Accounts, and I'm SO confused because Keely/Ash + Roy/Gordon are basically the same story, aren't they?

Did someone I know post a script or something for removing the AI packages from a new Laravel project? I can't seem to find it and I'm sure I saw it.

I keep seeing this Semafor graph that seems to show the Trump administration’s effect on international visits is comparable to the pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true” and indeed it is not. This is monthly data. We only have to Jun/Aug 2026. The lines are over-fitted to the months.
Semafor graph with catastrophic drops.

I was trying to find this article the other day. I knew I'd seen it. The stats are probably mangled a bit but maybe supports the idea that a lot of people don't check the info they're given?
technewsworld.com
AI Users Know They Should Check Answers. Many Don't
Nearly 90% of AI users say checking chatbot answers is their responsibility, but 70% do so only sometimes, rarely, or never, according to F-Secure. Experts explain why convincing answers can be hard to question.

For those in England & Wales who don’t get them on the NHS: private flu & covid jabs are available from today. I’ve just had both at my local pharmacy. £115 for the pair. Yes, that’s expensive, but if you’re a freelancer & don’t get sick pay it’s probably a lot cheaper than taking time off.

Perhaps this is a “leverage” thing? They enhance the curiosity of already-curious people?

Ross Wintle @rosswintle.uk · 01/10/2026
I feel like you are probably a curious person anyway. I can’t find the article now but I read something the other day about how even when given references to check, most people don’t. And the sycophancy of LLMs makes this a worse problem.

Interesting. I feel like you could answer a question like that with a search engine. So I think it's down to the "easier" and "quickly" bits that are key. This is also low stakes. Do you verify the answers?

Anyway, I've mostly been ill for the last two days and all that has, apparently, been brewing in my neurons while my immune system worked (and boy was it working hard!!) 🤷

I do really lament the apparent lack of (or possibly mis-directed?) curiosity that LLMs seem to have created. Sensible assessment is mostly drowned out by hype. And I really worry that we're handing over critical thinking to corporate-controlled machines that may not be there in the future.

But mostly I'm thinking about how there is this AI divide in tech. I'm sure there is something about neurotypes or personality types involved. I'm a moderate, curious thinker. And I wonder how we can bridge this divide and find some helpful common ground. 😕🤔

I realised that an old iPad I have around for reading ebooks that are PDFs (and therefore crap on an e-reader) was running ancient and not-updatable iOS. Quickly put into airplane mode. And then had the exact same lament.

I properly read this post about the "gestalt" of tools yesterday. I think it's incredibly insightful. Tools are part of systems. There's something about systems thinking and friction-as-a-good-thing that I've not pieced together properly yet.
deadsimpletech.com
There's no such thing as Just a Tool | deadSimpleTech
Heidegger thinks about tools like so: a tool is something (a thing that has being in the Heideggerian sense, not necessarily an object) that represents an extension of human capabilities in some way. A tool is thus any kind of thing that *lets you do something you wouldn't otherwise have been able to*. The important (for us) conceptual leap here is that when a tool works well, or isn't broken, it develops what Heidegger describes as a "ready-to-hand" quality: the tool fades into the background as a kind of human-tool gestalt of a human with the additional capability afforded by a tool forms. As a simple example of this, consider eating with a fork. When the fork is well-designed and not broken, *you don't explicitly have "I am using a fork" in your conscious mind while eating dinner*.

Like, I was _genuinely_ excited about learning how to do a new thing the other day. I like learning how to do new things. That's exciting. But the world thinks it's more exciting that a computer did a thing for them and that they had to do nothing! "Look at all the learning I'm NOT doing!!" Sigh

Ross Wintle @rosswintle.uk · 30/09/2026
I'm also hearing, and deeply thinking about, the relentless (and possibly toxic) positivity of the pro-AI crowd. I get why one could find this era attractive and exciting. But how can the alternatives be presented in a positive light without sounding glib?

Ross Wintle @rosswintle.uk · 30/09/2026
But intelligent chat must be a hugely positive thing for them? - Voice to words to actions - Results to words to voice Improvements in all areas of this flow must be amazing?
000
Ross Wintle @rosswintle.uk · 30/09/2026
Thing that I've not seen discussed anywhere: Chat interfaces must be a real accessibility boon for some. But do they exclude people who struggle with words? Like, is this LLM world really problematic for people with dyslexia? Is literacy going to become even more important if LLMs persist?
111
Ross Wintle @rosswintle.uk · 30/09/2026
I'm also thinking about chat as an interface. Text chat is a crap interface for many tasks. It has no affordances. It's often very slow. There's cognitive load. And with LLMs involved there's the possibility of the wrong thing being done. Plus… like… just LEARN TO DO THINGS!

New models arrive every week. Just because we can. And orgs want to own to own the news cycle. And what of these things will be here next year? MS's Recall is dead. Sora video is dead. The "more" of everything is relentless and stupid.
010
Ross Wintle @rosswintle.uk · 30/09/2026
Today I'm thinking about product release cycles. How Jev arrived and it will quickly be ripped off by one of the LLM houses. How Meta's Muse arrived and we already have OpenAI's Dots as a response. Everyone has to do the same thing as quickly as possible. Just because we can!

This is a very good point. Anthropic are arguing for AI rights. But we should do human rights properly first.

Tonight we are having 〰️Family Presentation Night〰️ and I am so excited. There are a few friends/SOs joining in so about 10 of us, pizza ordered from the local place, fun silly game to play, and then: glorious presentations. Everybody has been giggling all week and asking random questions and dropping mysterious hints about their presentation topics this will be amazing

Oh just a bunch of opinionated and super-privileged, AI-pilled nonsense about how no one should write code any more and how English is the best programming language. No nuance or critique - just toxic positivity ending with "don't be losers".

I'm open minded and want to hear different points of view. So I watched DHH at his conference. He seems to have lost any critical thinking that he once had. OR He's deliberately ignoring some stuff. You can't present the "logical choice" when you've not considered any downsides in depth.

I've taken to writing things down privately. I have MANY deep and probably interesting thoughts that the world just doesn't get to know about. This seems healthy. And I try to at least pop in on the "other side" occasionally. Often just getting the tone/vibe of the dialog is enough.

I know this is a very "meta" challenge to really awful stuff. But I find the psychology side of things pretty interesting.

The thing I find weird about the politics-in-tech stuff is the total lack of self-reflection. No one seems to think "Oh, other people don't like that? I wonder why?" It's all "Ignore the haters and move on". The incuriosity itself seems very anti-engineering. That itself is a red flag in tech.

It's not clear from the article what kind of AI this is. If it's a specialist intelligence that informs human decision making rather than directly controlling it, it could be quite beneficial. We are going to have to start to be more specific about what "AI" means as it proliferates.

I'm kinda surprised that my social feeds here aren't discussing Typesafe/Jev AI. I'm very curious what others think. It seems less ethically dubious and much more efficient, bridging AI recognition and deterministic output. I'm surprised coders aren't excited about this. Am I missing something?
