It’s estimated that 10% of meta’s revenue comes from scam ads. No accountability and no consequences. What a ripoff. Whilst their activities cost Australians dearly, the billions in revenue is structured so they pay minimal tax. One could argue that Meta is a net liability to Australia

Around 10% of meta’s income comes from scam ads and most of these tech giants expatriate most earnings from Australia. One could argue that these platforms leave Australia with a net deficit both directly and including the secondary costs of the adverse affects of their platforms. Time to act.

Exactly. Here’s a theory:I get a feeling some people are psychologically inclined to have positive ‘responses’ from being angry about something and when they are exposed to the likes of Facebook and they themselves become the product, the algorithm knows how to feed this unconscious desire.

We need to explore ways of introducing AI which allow clinicians to maintain and even enhance their skills and successfully manage cases where is nuance and ambiguity - often the most important and difficult situations in medicine to get right .

Heading for a weekend camping trip and the first thing we come across is the biggest goanna I’ve ever met - you have to look closely. Probably 2m in length. As my English mother-in-law says: living in Australia is like living in a zoo

And a follow on question for any US ally that hosts US troops and bases (I’m specifically thinking of Aus and Pine Gap) . What will be the response of an Australian govt. if the current US regime initiates an action that an Australian govt. objects to?

We’re so lucky in Australia that small regional hospitals have antivenom and we have a sophisticated communication and retrieval system. 20 years ago an individual in that situation would unfortunately have become a statistic.

Thanks, makes a lot of sense. Some human endeavours are precarious at the best of times. I wonder if there is a branch of ethics which analyses issues regarding these situations: how to license and consent to undertaking perilous events, when is it appropriate to rescue vs non-rescue?

I have never trekked to the Himalayas but I always wonder in these situations if they are being ‘rescued’ by other humans - what do the rescuers possess that the trekkers don’t possess? One might assume that if the ‘trekkers’ probably have essential survival equipment. Am I missing something here?

I’m interested in the philosophy of the definition of awareness. The description of ‘an episode of awareness without any recall’- isn’t that a conflation of concepts? My hypothesis is: we can’t call an historical event ‘an episode of awareness’ unless it is recalled in the conscious memory?
