In 2024, Republicans spent months trying to overturn the fair election of NC Justice Allison Riggs. Justice Riggs joined our shadow hearing to speak about their attempts at election interference.

North Carolina is no stranger to attacks on election integrity, and the state legislature is still trying to rig the rules. We will remain diligent and ensure that North Carolinians are guaranteed fair and equal access to the ballot box.

Trump knows he can’t win a fair fight. That’s why he’s trying to insert as much uncertainty as possible into our elections before November. We will not let him get away with it.

For Hunger Action Day, I visited the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which has provided hunger relief across our community for 45 years. Amid a cost-of-living crisis and cuts to SNAP benefits, it's essential that North Carolina families have access to immediate food assistance.

Today, @morelle.house.gov, @foushee.house.gov, and I hosted a shadow hearing on election security, where we spoke with voting rights experts about recent efforts to interfere with elections in NC and across the country.

We saw the tragic effects of misinformation during Hurricane Helene—people across Western NC died because of it. I met with experts working to ensure North Carolinians get the resources and information they need. We must stay vigilant and prepare for the next storm.

A non-partisan report found that the Trump admin delayed disaster-proofing efforts that could help prevent the worst effects of disasters like Helene—with no real justification. This is a slap in the face to communities in North Carolina and all over the country.

As Trump threatened annihilation of our adversaries at the U.N., I was at New York Climate Week focused on real solutions to create a healthy economy and a healthy environment. The Thriving Economy Project is how we get there.

Attorney General Todd Blanche now has the power to decide where federal prisoners serve their sentences, allowing him to reward Trump’s allies and punish his enemies. I spoke to The Marshall Project about the policy change and the corruption that comes with it.

In case you missed it, all of these war crimes were actions taken or threatened by President Trump or Secretary Pete Hegseth. We will continue to shine a light on this administration’s criminal and dangerous actions.

25 years ago today, our country experienced one of the darkest days in its history— and was forever changed. On 9/11 we mourn the lives tragically lost and recognize the bravery of first responders and ordinary Americans. We stand today with those grieving loved ones and promise to never forget.

I spoke with small business leaders about how Trump’s latest illegal tariffs are raising costs for small businesses and consumers. The Supreme Court has been clear: Trump cannot enact these tariffs without approval from Congress.

I spoke with Raleigh NARFE about the harmful impacts of the Trump administration’s cuts to our federal workforce. Public servants have been recklessly sacrificed at the expense of Americans’ health and safety. I will continue to fight this administration’s attacks against federal workers.

Venkata Vasamsetty was finally released from ICE custody after being arrested and wrongfully detained. While I’m glad Ms. Vasamsetty is home safe, thousands of law-abiding immigrants like her are still being held in inhumane conditions using our tax dollars.

Representative Deborah Ross @ross.house.gov · 01/09/2026
ICE’s own data says the majority of immigrants they’ve arrested and detained have no criminal record. Your tax dollars are funding the detention of those immigrants in private prisons. We must put an end to this cruel practice.

Venkata Vasamsetty has been illegally detained by ICE. She is being denied food and insulin, and shouldn't even be in custody to begin with. As a substitute teacher in Cary, she is a hardworking member of our community. We will keep working for her release.

I went to one of the worst ICE Detention Centers in the country with @jayapal.house.gov, @hankjohnson.house.gov, @repnikema.bsky.social, & @foushee.house.gov. ICE is using your taxpayer dollars to mistreat people who shouldn't even be detained in the first place. We cannot allow a facility in NC.

I conducted oversight at the Stewart Detention Center in Georgia, where North Carolinians are being detained. The conditions are worse than we imagined and we will keep demanding answers and accountability. And we don't need one in NC.

ICE is reportedly opening a new detention facility in North Carolina in an abandoned private prison. We've seen ICE mistreat and neglect detainees in facilities across the country–we cannot allow that to happen here.

Honored to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Juniper Level Rosenwald School. Rosenwald schools were built in the South when Black children were denied access to quality education. Communities came together to build the future their children deserved.

Just when we thought a few Republicans might do the right thing and block Todd Blanche’s nomination for Attorney General, they folded. Blanche is completely unqualified for the job. He has proven again and again that his loyalties lie with Donald Trump over the American people.

Great to stop by Tarboro Road's National Night Out to promote safety in our community. This was more than just a block party. Nights like this are invaluable to building connections between families and the law enforcement officers that keep our communities safe.

The Voting Rights Act was signed into law after a history of suppressing the votes of Black Americans in the South. Despite our nation's progress, Jim Crow-style voter suppression is still here: our state legislature, SCOTUS, & the President have undermined the right to vote. The fight continues.

ICYMI: ICE announced plans for a new immigrant detention facility at a problematic prison in Eastern NC. I have called on the Trump admin to cancel these plans immediately. This admin continues to violate the safety and human dignity of immigrants. We can't let them expand this abuse in our state.

Any veteran struggling with opioid addiction should receive treatment as soon as they're ready. But too often, distance or long waits for care stand in the way. My bipartisan bill with Rep. Davis & Rep. Carol Miller will connect veterans with virtual treatment providers.

Republicans want us to give this admin the benefit of the doubt on their new bill that criminalizes any child who overstays their visa. I won't standby giving unchecked power to an admin that has repeatedly violated the law.

I led a roundtable to discuss how this admin harmed higher education by changing student loan rules. Trump’s policies are hurting the future teachers, healthcare workers, business leaders, & more that Wake County needs. I'll keep fighting to make sure higher ed remains a pathway to opportunity.

I love going to the farmers market; I know where my food comes from and I pay fair prices that go straight to NC farmers. But families are struggling to afford groceries, gas, and more because of this admin. With 100 days until Election Day, it's clear we're moving in the wrong direction.

Despite how this admin advertises a new “gold-standard” in science, scientific research is collapsing nationwide. Trump & his political appointees now want to control ALL grant decisions, risking clinical trials, biotech, & more. It's a cheap cover-up of their costly threats to science.

A new Republican bill would make any child who overstays their visa a criminal--even if they're with a parent or don't have the ability to leave on their own. This isn't about safety. This is about hurting immigrant children. @raskin.house.gov and I explain:

House Republicans want to pass an immigration bill that would criminalize children—even toddlers— who overstay their visas. We can't trust this admin to treat children humanely or follow the law as is. Why would we trust them with a new law that could damage more kids?

Nearly 6 years after we lost civil rights icon John Lewis, President Trump is spreading lies and pushing to take voting access away from millions of Americans. We can't let that happen. We must follow John Lewis' legacy, get into some good trouble, and exercise our right to vote this November.

Todd Blanche faces the Senate today. From Trump's slush fund to the mishandling of the Epstein files and Ghislaine Maxwell's shady prison transfer, the evidence is clear: the Senate must vote NO on confirming him as Attorney General.

I was proud to join Cary Mayor Weinbrecht and @wakegov Chair Don Mial to announce over $1 million in federal funding for Walnut Creek. Since the 90s, Cary and Raleigh residents have worked to restore Walnut Creek. This funding shows what we can achieve when communities and government work together.
