I don’t want to sound glib, but if a woman actually wanted to “make up a crime to ruin a man’s reputation,” they’d pick one that people actually give a shit about, like hurting a dog or something.

Reading, and writing, are holy. I love reading novels because they tell me something. They say: "this is what someone believed enough to dedicate months or years of their life to say." This is just as true for the trashiest pulp as it is for the highest literature.

Why these nuns have filed more than 350 shareholder resolutions
In the small town of Atchison, Kan., some unlikely investors are making a name for themselves as outspoken shareholder activists.

Some of the fiercest activists I know in my line of work holding corporations accountable for their misdeeds, are nuns, using their shareholdings to demand respect for labour rights, human rights, etc. During the opioid crisis they got many pharma board directors kicked off.

Every now and then I see myself referred to as an "AI Denier" and I want to be clear I acknowledge "AI" exists, it's just I think it's a massive energy drain, created from theft, implemented poorly for inappropriate tasks by loathsome tech executives who get hard at the idea of the rest of us dying

The main distinction between the AI resignations and pronouncements is that while they say there is a >10% chance AI will wipe us out, there is a 100% chance that emissions from all the fossil fuel reserves that exist on these companies balance sheets will wipe us out.

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

For the first time, a peer-reviewed study has "drawn a straight line from single corporate emitters like Exxon or Chevron ... to specific heatwaves and areas of extreme rainfall." The new methodological framework could make it much easier to hold Big Oil accountable for its climate lies.

My 'process' is to word vomit something half coherent, sit on it for two agonizing years, forget about it for three years, and then dig it up being like: oh! There's something there... Only because I've lost all attachment to the piece I'm able to finish, making new connections as I'm (re)writing.

For creative writing: the most joy I feel is when I'm writing through a tough spot and something all of a sudden clicks. Things are coming together, sentences flow; I am in love with this process. I can feel pride because my pieces took time (literal years) and effort. Prompters do not love writing.

But, now that Google is broken and and AI stuffed down everyone's throat, how are younger folks supposed to build up their own expertise and critical thinking skills? Esp if they're told there won't be any jobs anyway

I genuinely do not understand the AI appeal. At work, a few colleagues gush over Claude. I tried it once for research and it cost me SO much time to correct and fact check, because unlike AI, I know my shit. If you don't know your shit what you will be regurgitating via AI is, well, actual shit.
