You can apply for a trademark for a common word, but it needs to be used in a unique way. Otherwise the application would be rejected. Or you would lose a lawsuit when you went to protect it.

What's fun is that "Donut" is trademarked in the US. But not for food. But for the name of a media company. Since it is also the name of a common pastry, bakeries can use it all they want, because they are not in competition with the media company and are unlikely to be mistaken for each other.

If we don't add videos we made ourselves, it is going to add AI generated videos, altering the photos and text we included to make it happen. AI doesn't know what we want to say. AI doesn't know how we want to say it. AI doesn't speak for us.

When we added photos for the ads from our photographer of our customers in our store front, it immediately AI generated additional photos of those people and changing them and changing the space. Like a backrooms nightmare. We have to go out of our way to remove the AI and turn it off.

At the marketing day job, was building an ad campaign with google ads. Out of the gate, it inserted AI text across the board for the campaign based off our site. We had to delete all of it so we could get our own message in. At several points, it tried to re-insert the AI text.

Written 55 years ago, Schulz's heartfelt clarity cuts through the noise, even today. h/t @tisserand.bsky.social

Scan of a typed letter from 1970, from Peanuts creator Charles Schulz, addressed to "Joel Lipton, 622 N. Foothill Road, Beverly Hills, Calif. 90210"

It reads:

"Dear Joel:

I think it is more difficult these days to define what makes a good citizen than it has ever been before. Certainly all any of us can do is follow our own conscience and retain faith in our democracy. Sometimes it is the very people who cry out the loudest in favor of getting back to what they call "American Virtues" who lack this faith in our country.

I believe that our greatest strength lies always in the protection of our smallest minorities.

Sincerely yours,

Charles M. Schulz"
