European guidelines for hypertension in 2024: a comparison of key recommendations for clinical practice. www.nature.com/articles/s41... @natrevcardiol.nature.com #CardioSky #MedSky #Hypertension #ESC #ESH
In most patients with hypertension, initiating treatment with a low-dose, dual combination of a renin–angiotensin system inhibitor (an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB)) and either a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (CCB) or a thiazide or thiazide-like diuretic is recommended. If blood pressure (BP) remains uncontrolled, the 2023 European Society of Hypertension (ESH) guideline4 recommends increasing the doses of the initial two-drug combination to the maximum-recommended or maximum-tolerated dose of the components before transitioning to a three-drug combination. By contrast, the 2024 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guideline3 recommends the addition of a third drug from a different class before increasing the doses of the initial combination.

Covid infection ages blood vessels, especially in women

Peer-Reviewed Publication

European Society of Cardiology

A Covid infection, particularly in women, may lead to blood vessels aging around five years, according to research published in the European Heart Journal [1] today (Monday).

Blood vessels gradually become stiffer with age, but the new study suggests that Covid could accelerate this process. Researchers say this is important since people with stiffer blood vessels face a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, including stroke and heart attack.

Covid-19 seems to age blood vessels – but only among women
Women's arteries seem to be stiffer if they have had covid-19, with the same effect not being found among men
