When One Piece was not crazy good this week.

Oh cool, Crunchyroll is dubbing another isekai where the protagonist gets cheat powers by doing a mundane real world task.

George W Bush getting the news about 9/11 in the famous image that became a meme. In this context he's being informed of the existence of a Goofy gijinka that can be considered attractive by traditional societal context.

Some exec at Crunchyroll looked at their entire catalog; which includes the likes of Takopi's Original Sin, Apocalypse Hotel, Brave Bang Bravern, Skip and Loafer, **Bocchi the Rock** and thought "You know what needs a dub? Fruitmaster." I'm tired, chat. So, so, tired.

Lastly, my Dub of the Year Award for 2024 goes to Dead Dead Demon's DeDeDeDe Destruction.

A near perfect dub that captures the quiet desperation of the end of the world beautifully.

My Best Directing award goes to John Swasey for Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night.

Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night

The show is just beautiful and the dub recreates that feeling of pulling yourself out of burnout. Not an easy watch, but one worth your time.

My Best Writing award goes to Alex von David and Erica Mendez for Delicious in Dungeon.

Delicious in Dungeon

Punchy when it needs to be, heartfelt when it decides to go for the gut-punch. Delicious in Dungeon's scripts are bold and assertive translations of the show's manic energy and quiet introspection.

My Best Actor in a Drama goes to Zeno Robinson as Fighter D from Go! Go! Loser Ranger.

Fighter D (Go, Go, Loser Ranger)

Fighter D is great. Zeno is both silly and desperate to survive, it's a great performance worth braving Hulu's clumsy navigation for.

My award for Best Lead Actor in a Comedy goes to Andrew Love as Helck from Helck.

Helck (Helck)

Andrew Love is a wonderfully delightful protagonist is a bright and colorful world. Don't worry 'bout the rest.

My award for Voice Acting Black Magic goes to Robert Pattinson as The Grey Heron from The Boy and the Heron.

The Grey Heron (The Boy and the Heron)

Look, first voice-over role ever and he comes in, workshops a voice instead of just letting his vision take over, and goes full on feral goblin mode in a way live-action struggles to allow him. I've got a lot of respect for him for how much respect he gave the part. Also he needs to be allowed to tap into his feral goblin mode more often.

Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy goes to SungWon Cho as Senshi from Delicious in Dungeon.

Senshi (Delicious in Dungeon)

Whether pestering orcs for bread yeast or making sure his companions get enough to eat because of past trauma, Senshi is a cinnamon roll and SungWon Cho plays him as a cinnamon role.

Best Sounds Mixing goes to Benjamin Harrington and Michael Brooks for Delicious in Dungeon.

Best Ensemble Cast goes to The First Slam Dunk, co-directed by Michael Sinterniklaas and Stephanie Sheh.

In a film with as many moving parts as The First Slam Dunk, everyone gets something to do and there are plenty of emotional story arcs to go around. The cast and NYAV Post get that and everyone got a real chance to shine.

For Golden Ham I have chosen Keith David as Dr. Tenma from Pluto.

Dr. Tenma (Pluto)

How do you adapt one of the most Shakespereian antagonists of Osamu Tezuka's canon? Cast a voice actor who was once pitted against one of Shakespere's greatest antagonists (The Tempest's Puck in Gargoyles). Keith David portrays Dr. Tenma with such a painful empathy.

Voice Actor to Watch goes to Emily Rudd as Marcelle from Delicious in Dungeon.

Marcille "Delicious in Dungeon"

Gonna admit, Netflix casting an actress from a live-action adaptation of One Piece as one of the emotional core characters of an anime is a gambit I didn't not expect to work as well as it did. Emily is great as Marcille, and if dubbing is something she wants to continue persuing either between seasons of live-action or as a core pillar of her portfolio, I'm all for it.

Starting off with Underrated Performance is Tom Agilo as Ryu Sasakura from Bartender: Glass of God.

Ryu Sasakura "Bartender: Glass of God"

Tom's performance is deserving of a Dubbie, but my decision of consideration for Underrated Performance is also because of what the dub of Glass of God as a whole represents, a second chance. The coming back around for something that got missed during its original broadcast run, also being done as responsibly as the platform allows.
