Sometimes he'd wake up in the middle of the night and Keiji's side of the bed would be empty, like he had tonight.

With a sigh, he tumbled out of bed to find Keiji sobbing in the kitchen (again), eating whole pickles directly out of the jar (again).

"Honey, if you're hungry, I'll make you something-"

The omega all but growled at him, cradling the massive jar protectively in the crook of one arm.

"Keiji, baby, talk to me. It's 3am, why are you crying in the kitchen? Let me help, sweetheart-"

"Shhh. . . you're not fat, honey."

"Sorry I'm acting crazy too. . . " Keiji sniffled.

"You're not crazy either, 'Ji. Even if you were fat and crazy, I'd love you anyway."

"Lil' Owl's going through a growth spurt every day, if you think about it. Of course he's gonna eat a lot."

Keiji just whined softly and ducked his head into the alpha's neck.

He pressed a light finger to Keiji's lips and the omega trailed off, looking up at him with saucer-wide eyes when he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out two packages: an unimaginably tiny pair of little sneakers, made for feet that couldn't even walk in them, tied together by the laces, and a little plastic capsule.

"So, I guess we don't really need these anymore," he placed the shoes in Keiji's palm. "But, consider them a courting gift for the future. I couldn't sit still this afternoon while I was waiting to hear from you, so I went and walked around a mall that's kinda close to campus."

"I love them. Are they supposed to be volleyball shoes?" Keiji asked hoarsely.

"I mean, they are to me. I don't think pups can really play sports when they're that small. . ."

His omega laughed wetly and stretched up on his toes to kiss the end of Koutarou's nose.

"You big sap. Thank you, they're adorable."

"Why? Because it's your job?"

"Um, yes, but-"

"Do you only play because there are other people counting on you?"

"Kind of, but-"

"You play volleyball, and give your very best, even though there's no reliable way to predict the outcome of a game, because it's still fun, right? It's worth the risk to maybe lose because, in the end, if you have fun, it's still worthwhile, yes?"

"I- I think I see what you're saying, Dad, but-"

"Son. You're not going to be able to guarantee that you'll be a good parent before your time comes; no one can. All that you can do is give your pups— and Keiji-kun— your 120%. A good alpha doesn't have to be perfect, he just has to be present."

I suppose I should pack a bag to take to the hospital soon. . . Just in case I go into labor early.

Then a spasm of tightness seized his lower belly, causing him to gasp and search out the wall of the pool to hold onto.

It wasn't painful, really, just uncomfortable; a cinching, squeezing feeling that started to fade as he let out a long breath.

That wasn't an invitation, you know.

"Keiji?"

Kiyoomi had swum back up next to him, his sweet, honeycomb scent cloying overtop of the chemical tang of chlorine.

"Just a few false contractions, nothing to worry about. If you're really in week 28, Mr Skinny-Minnie, expect those to start any time now," Keiji huffed as the spasm eased slowly.

"How much does it hurt?" The other omega's dark eyes raced over him, like he wanted to help but was unsure how to.

"Oh, they pass pretty quickly," Keiji waved off. The last of the pressure had already faded. "It's more like a muscle spasm than actual pain pain— deep, and uncomfortable, but I don't think these are anything like the real thing."

Kiyoomi didn't look convinced.

"The first time I had one was in the middle of the night; but, my mother had warned me that she had a lot of false starts late in her pregnancy with me, so I was a bit more prepared. Kou nearly had a fit though— I'm lucky his phone was dead, he wanted to call an ambulance."

"Oh yay, another horrible side effect that can blind side me at random," Kiyoomi groaned. "Must be nice to have someone like that in your corner though. I'm pretty sure if I asked my mother anything about pregnancy, she would faint on the spot."

Koutarou motioned for him to open the window. Keiji shook his head 'no'.

For a long time, they just looked at each other. Then, the alpha pointed up to him before morphing the gesture into a small heart by pinching his thumb and index finger together, smiling weakly.

It wasn't the question that he had been expecting: Do you still love me?

Of course, my star.

Keiji smoothed down his nightshirt, making sure that it hung low enough to cover him before he climbed up and knelt on the window box, moving into full view so that the alpha could see him better over the eaves. Keiji pointed back at him until Koutarou nodded 'yes'.

Okay, good. I've got your attention.

Keiji moved to hold his arms in a cradle across his chest, making a gentle rocking motion like he was holding an infant.

Babies. I want babies, Kou, and I don't care how they get here.

They passed an MSBY mural on the wall of the station as they made their way slowly to the stairs going up. Seeing a larger than life artist's rendition of Koutarou's face plastered across the wall tripped something in his mind.

Could it be. . .

Maybe, but if so, it's way too early to tell.

He's gone out and bought a box of pregnancy tests about two weeks before, after Koutarou's rut had ended: both the old school 'pee on a stick' kind, and the pheromonal type that were supposed to work better for all secondary genders.

"No!" he yelped, but snapping his head back to look at the mangaka made the world start to spin again. "Sorry, no, I- I don't want to worry him. I'll be fine once I'm able to get home. I apologize for not being able to continue our work for the day. . ."

I don't want to get my hopes up, just to have them dashed.

"Nonsense, Akaashi-kun," Udai waved down his apologies. "Your inside knowledge on volleyball is killer, but it's only good to me if you're conscious, dude."

"It's not like I have a lot of choices, Bokuto," Sakusa seethed. "It's this or risk never playing again."

Again. . . if it was you, wouldn't you do the same thing?

"I wouldn't say never; people have been out for longer with injuries before, and they ended up coming back. Remember when Barnes-san blew out his knee? He was on the bench for like a year-"

Sakusa looked at him like he was the stupidest man on the planet.

"Barnes didn't pop a fucking baby out of his-"

Koutarou held his hands up in surrender.

"Okay, okay, I'll approve you being excused from practice for the next four days . . . that starts Monday, right?"

"Yes."

"Okay. Text me or something afterwards to let me know you're okay."

"Bo-"

"I don't need details," he clarified quickly. "And I'm not trying to talk you out of anything— it's your life and none of my business—but if you change your mind, for any reason at all, and you want someone to back you up when you go to Coach and management, I'll support you 120%, Sakusa-san."

Thankfully most of the Jackals (execpt for Hinata and Atsumu) had been resistant from the start to learning the song that he'd been begging them to rehearse for the occasion of proposing to Keiji— probably in no small part because, when he'd asked, Sakusa had snorted with laughter, shocking the rest of the locker room into silence.

"Oh, you're serious," the other ace had said, holding up a hand in apology. "Bokuto, that's not a love song."

"But I saw it in a movie once!"

"Still not a love song. Also, less than half of us even speak English. Pick something in Japanese, let's start there-"

"Do we have to start anywhere?" Tomas-san chimed in.

"Bo, just take her out to dinner like a normal person," Meian sighed, pinching his brow. "And, please, the match has been over for an hour; put some goddamn clothes on."
