Just paying for vehicle infrastructure would require a massive increase in gas taxes (a least a couple $s/gallon) Subsidizing transit and covering all the externalities of driving easily gets us over $10/gallon.

Yeah it ain't complicated.. If we make roast beef sandwiches $1 each by subsidizing them, lots of people will buy those instead of the $8 chicken salad. And that's what we've been doing with highways and and stroads for a couple generations.
