1963 - Françoise Hardy - J'suis D'Accord The story is that yé-yé got its name from The Beatles, but Françoise was already putting out hit records while they were playing in Hamburg. In terms of film clips, France was clearly far ahead of the UK, as you will now see.

Looking at the Fonts In Use page for Data 70, and this is one Data 70 book cover I haven't spotted before. Looks like a Ghost Box invention (or something from their imitators) but it's a real book from 1973.
The cover of a hardback book: Voices from the Tapes: Recordings from the Other World by Peter Bander. A b&w photo of four men wearing bulky headphones listening to a tape recorded. Background is filled by a Letratone pattern of blue concentric circles.

One of my most popular (relatively speaking) posts here is about Newsom being bad. This doesn't make up for his misdeeds but is good news.

I love it, but a) I have a soft spot for cinematic fairy tales and b) it's probably the least fleet of their films. It's definitely not where I would start with P&P. I might also say that Marius Goring is miscast; fantastic in AMOLAD but a little callow here (pitting him against Walbrook was unfair)

I am kind of in awe of you putting Age of Consent above The Red Shoes. And here I thought my secretly liking A Canterbury Tale the most was bold.

In this case, it's particularly dismaying because 21st-c. TV feels like an especially good medium to find and elevate the overlooked, given how much access has changed in different ways.

It's very weird to me that Enlightened hasn't been rediscovered in the wake of White Lotus. Not that they're very similar shows to be fair. For one thing, Enlightened is 100x better.

RIP Peter Max. I was just admiring his 1971 "Astrologicalendar" the other day: www.peculiarmanicule.com/1971-peter-m... It has compatible dates with 2027, if anyone wants to print their own and remember Peter Max all year
Cover to the Peter Max 1971 Astrologicalendar, a deeply groovy astrology-themed calendar, featuring a ringed planet in front of a ton of five-pointed stars in a blue sky.Pisces. A blonde figure in a dress and a top hat with a star on it stands holding some flowers on a plain under a striped red sky.Libra. Several figures cavort under two flowers or trees. They might also be floating.Capricorn. A figure with long blue hair sits cross-legged away from the viewer on a starkly red planet, looking at a distant green ringed planet.

Ottawa Police have already been using police databases to stalk random women they see in public Now Toronto Police are (allegedly) using police databases to help drug traffickers interested in assassinating prison officials and intimidating witnesses to murders www.thestar.com/news/gta/stu...
Toronto Const. Timothy Barnhardt was unaware a recording device had been hidden inside his police cruiser as he invited an alleged drug dealer into the passenger seat. Barnhardt showed the man the computer screen attached to the centre console, where the veteran officer could search confidential databases containing people's home addresses. Police allege that Barnhardt had been feeding the information gleaned from the searches to criminals, who used it to conduct shootings, robberies and other violent acts. Inside the cruiser on that September 2025 day, the man handed Barnhardt multiple $100 bills, which the officer tucked into the front pocket of his police vest.

That all said, I liked Bjork immediately upon hearing her as a teenager, so it's genuinely hard for me to put myself in the position of finding her voice exceptionally bizarre

Thinking about the first Bjork song I heard vs the first Newsom, I can't say I find this surprising. But Bjork debuting in the alt 90s and Newsom in the hipster 00s (putting it glibly) is surely a factor. Bjork was also basically unique while Newsom was easily tarred with the avocadies thing

Given the requirements for passing an amendment, even if this story is true it would be about Clinton realizing a significant portion of his party was legit anti-gay rights enough to vote for a const amendment. Which is kind of the problem in these analogies: how do you know when they're faking it?

Trumpism is class war from above. Its effects are ripping society apart. Profits as high as never before since WW2. All extracted from labor - the effect: "Employees’ share from wages and benefits fell to 60 per cent, the lowest level since the 1950s." www.ft.com/content/6f3a...

People complain endlessly about academic / "theory" jargon, but when a non-academic writer comes up with a specific but catchy term it takes like a year to turn into useless nonsense. This is why academics need to make their terms as repellently dull as possible

Depressing but also kind of funny how imperial units gifted us the arbitrary line of 6 ft tall. Are there metric people out there firmly committed to "I only date men over 183 cm"?

For a while I had a pet theory that the big generation gap of my lifetime (I'm late 40s) was b/t people who grew up with reruns and people who didn't. Boomer nostalgia was problematic, but I'm glad I absorbed so much other 20th c. culture (L&H, Looney Tunes, etc.) without needing to make an effort

Here's a fun timeline juxtaposition. The stores will cost about $70M from what I'm seeing
A screenshot of a post from USA Today Opinion that reads "Opinion: Mamdani's idea may sound appealing, but it's NYC taxpayers who will take the hit, subsidizing discounts they may never even use."Screenshot of a graph from AdImpact showing how much money was spent on Michigan Senate Democratic Primary Ad Support. The total was $80.9 million with the Haley Stevens campaign receiving $63.9M of that total
