Artists are telling other folks in the scene to ask me if they can play next year's iteration of my festival while we're in crunch time preparing for THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL, which is in ONE MONTH. Stop this. I will never book you anywhere if you do this.

I haven't done one of these in a very long time, but here is a Friday 5x5 of my previous week's scrobbled listening habits. It has been the correct weather for Charalambides' "A Vintage Burden."

It's looking like the HR guy who interviewed me last week has ghosted me. How this is standard practice is beyond me.

An album that was cursed by time - delays, lack of funds for studio time, and other setbacks made this album come out almost a decade after it should have. Clad in Darkness were so groundbreaking and a delight to see back in the mid-aughts. RIP Chris. cladindarkness.bandcamp.com/album/decath...

This is happening Saturday at ye mighty Cole's Bar in Chicago. I completely overhauled the Mors Vitaque set with a fresh mix and some brand new material. Plus, it's free! Don't miss out on seeing a rare Vanhellig show, too.

Though I have been determined to get this album on vinyl for the past few years, my unfortunate financial situation has kept me from realizing a long-held dream. I am happy to release a newly remastered (thanks @gonemage.bsky.social) version of the self-titled Footpaths album with new art.

Some of you may remember a big thread I posted on Twitter about a Chilean band called Uaral. They've both resurfaced in a band called Tregul and played the Uaral song "Niche" a few nights ago (purportedly for the second time ever, according to vocalist Caudal). A beautiful rendition.

Jad and David Fair sold so many of raw-as-hell art punk cassettes from their Maryland home that is the stuff of legend. You don't really need a DAW to make music. You just need to do it. RIP David Fair.

This excludes actual journalism. Interview artists you like. Dig deeper than your preconceptions about art and music. Find out more and share it with people because you are legitimately curious.

Spending time away from criticism has gradually shown me just how little it does for art and music nowadays, especially with the Internet at everyone's fingertips. Go explore art and music for yourself, instead of crafting your taste based on some text influencer's whims.

My favorite thing about rating sites like Encyclopaedia Metallum or Rateyourmusic is when some random user finds a critically acclaimed genre classic and gives it a score below 50%, saying something like "Actually this is pretty bad and all of you are wrong."

Been working pretty intensely on some morose black metal for a split with a friend's dungeon synth / black metal project. Could use some feedback if anyone is interested in giving it a listen. Shoot me a DM if we are friends.
