Watching Prime Minister Carney discussing the breakdown of the Canada-US trade deal at a press conference and just really appreciating living in a country where the leader can speak coherently and knowledgeably about what is actually happening.

Thanks for the specific recommendation! Looks like openwhispr.com is a good cross platform alternative if people lower costs and the ability to do local-only voice processing (still based on the same Whisper transcription models as SuperWhisper)

I think it's important to separate the societal costs from AI (emissions, water shortages, disinformation, sycophancy, etc.) from its genuinely useful applications. It's a tool that should be regulated to curb the worst of its negatives, while retaining its positive applications.

Interesting analysis, but of course we have to take it with a bit of salt, since we as Ukraine supporters aren't on the frontlines or managing the war effort. I did read that Fedorov himself praised the work of Syrskyi in 2022, but said that this new era of offensive ops needs a different approach.

Can you share some of their writing? I've been convinced of the opposite, but I'd certainly be happier knowing that Syrskyi is more competent than what reporting by some Ukrainian soldiers suggests.

Bold choice to have the stance: I know better than Ukrainian civilians being bombarded and soldiers being misused, "They have the right to be dumb." I don't have any grounds to be that confident in my own personal beliefs, so I listen to people with experience. kyivindependent.com/why-ukraines...

Not to mention when Zelensky attempted to dissolve Ukraine's independent anti-corruption bodies before being forced to back down after mass protests and international criticism. As much as he has done to build support for Ukraine, he has also gone dangerously close to turning it into Russia.

The "costing taxpayer money" part is the problem. With governments refusing to implement minimal wealth taxes, there is simply nothing left to squeeze out of the budget. Here in Canada, BC was forced to buy ferries from China because no Canadian yard even tried to compete with Chinese pricing.

In Starmer's case, he abandoned most of the promises that Labour supporters elected him on. A core lesson for politicians anywhere is that you should never betray the people who voted for you, even if you are as directionless and unmoored as Starmer.

Even in Burnham's case, it looks like he's going to parachute into No. 10 without any sort of public vote. Perhaps there should be a rule that anyone who wants to replace a PM from their party should have to win the support of a majority of grassroots members of that party. 1/2

I imagine it would be hard to have a sufficient number of point defence systems to protect all US power plants and refineries without undermining strategic stability, since I think that level of coverage would approach the scope of Golden Dome.

Ronan Joseph 🇨🇦 @ronancj.bsky.social · 22/05/2026
In the article, you suggest fixed economic targets like refineries would be exceptionally escalatory if hit. Wouldn't these be hard to defend from conventional ICBMs, given that they are immobile and can't be concealed or hardened?

The Snowbirds promote Canada's national identity wherever they fly, including in the US. That is why almost every country with military jets has a national demo team. Your argument can also be applied to a lot of things. Why spend 100s of millions on stadiums so people can throw a ball into hoops?

$15 million per year is spare change at the level of the federal government. It's 0.02% of this year's defence budget, nevermind the tiny fraction of the overall budget it is. There is a point where trying to find cuts wherever possible risks long-term effects far greater than the given "savings".
