Okay so I've built a new Atlas, this time it lets you explore the conversations on Bluesky over the past 7 days graphically. It should update every ~6 hours and help you navigate the information environment that exists on here. I've learned a LOT about what people do here today... atlas.jazco.dev

Atlas
A living map of what Bluesky is talking about: the past week's conversations, grouped into topics and regions and rebuilt every six hours.

Book rec! A story of love in hard times, harder even than ours. Beautiful art, beautiful writing, beautifully researched; also it made me cry twice This is a book that will show you why you have to survive this
The front cover of Charity and Sylvia by Tillie Walden. Two women are drawn sitting facing each other, surrounded by an ornate border.

Well done to the picture editor who captioned this delightful snap of a black pig swimming off the west coast of Greece “swine-dark sea” www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Swine-dark sea ... Mediterranean black pigs swim at a beach on the private island of Atokos, in the lonian Sea off the west coast of Greece. The island, which is uninhabited by humans, is owned by a shipping magnate

This is even better than the Dutch word "(mijn) reeëeer" (pre-1995 spelling), coined by Brands Corstius iirc. Which means "(my) honor as a deer" and is very common among cervid nobility

The people who design modern newspaper banners are all cowards. (1910)
The banner for the "Hog special" edition of The Progressive Farmer And Southern Farm Gazette features a scene of a man and his team plowing a field, being foreground and obscuring part of the Progressive Farmer logo, which itself obscures the background.

When I pitched a review of Anton Jäger's Hyperpolitics, I wanted to read it against Fukuyama's End of History and the Last Man because both books tackle similar themes in radically different ways. The result is a double-helix of an essay that is one of the best things I've ever written for LC.

The End of History and the Final Girl
Anton Jäger’s "Hyperpolitics" is, at its best, late marginalia for "The End of History and the Last Man." At its worst, Jäger, like Fukuyama, is a prisoner of his political pieties.

maybe the solution really was "create the social norm that every member of society spend 1-1.5 hours a week engaging in communal ritual and being morally exhorted by a member of the intelligentsia" all along

I've been thinking about my fursona a lot over the past couple days so here's an imageboard of the vibe I'm going for good pig vibes: ✓ "when pigs fly" ✓ piggy bank :) ✓ cute and round ✓ eating mushrooms in the forest

Oh, you're saying that land enclosure has deeply indebted future generations, enabling their hard earned income to be extracted by landowners for the mere right to physically exist somewhere? That sounds like such a horrific injustice that it would justify aggressive policy intervention to remedy.

the quiz results look weird because it's 2026 and the Harvard Dialect Survey it gets its data from ended in 2003 at this point it's less 'how do you talk' and more 'how would someone a quarter-century ago have perceived your strange futuristic accent'

Like, to me, THIS is what being fat looks like, ideally. Abundance (so much food), relaxation (this seems like a leisurely breakfast), luxury (these are in direct contrast with "why I don't eat what I want" day to day: too ashamed, too harried, too poor)
A painting of a fat, pale woman drinking tea. In front there is a table full of fruit and pastries, as well as a samovar. Next to her a cat stretches contentedly. The Merchant's Wife by Boris Kustodiev (1918).
