BBC News unfortunately not following best practices. On the home page their sub-headline reads as shown below (alt text provided). Best practices say to avoid this sort of language and there's sound reasoning as to why: styleguide.transjournalists.org#section-phra...
Screenshot of BBC News home page, featured live story has headline that reads, "LIVE Police name suspect in Canada school shooting as 18-year old Jesse van Rootselaar." The sub-headline at the time of screenshot reads, "Police say the suspect was 'born as a biological male, who... approximately six years ago began to transition to female, and identified as female'".

I said yesterday that with every passing day it feels like we're background characters in a DC movie supervillain's story arc, and now I don't know what movie we're in.

The weather app that comes with my phone is saying it's cloudy with 8km/hr wind right now. Meanwhile I'm listening to the wind violently slap rain against my windows, while the trees outside are looking like Florida palms during El Niño.

Indeed, it does seem like Fanjoy has been campaigning since January 2023, making it 2 years and 3 months running against Poilievre. Hard work doesn't always render pay off in elections, but this time it might just be a mix of factors, including this one.

From the other site, an old tweet of Bruce Fanjoy's from January of 2024 responding to a reply saying he couldn't defeat Pierre. It appears Fanjoy has been campaigning for at least a couple of years in Carleton.

Promotional graphic of a book launch event. On the left side of the graphic, a navy blue book is pictured with the title, "The Poilievre Project: A radical blueprint for corporate rule" with a cover image of Pierre Poilievre. To the right of the graphic, a light pink background with two photos in circle frames, one of a man and one of a woman. Text says, "Book launch. Martin Lukacs in conversation with Romy Garrido."

First year doing the #OscarsDeathRace and I must say, it's kept me sane and brought me a little joy through the news cycle.

When I watch the Oscars I know a fraction of the films nominated, let alone the Documentaries, Internationals, and Shorts. I decided I'd watch as many as I can before the awards—and it's been great. The Shorts were especially delightful, a shame I've overlooked them. They're hard to find, though!

And pardon me, but if I were at the head of a multibillion dollar corporation, and a think tank with this Microsoft Paint logo handed me a proposal, I would have a hard time taking it seriously. From their Facebook page.

Six and a half years later, and this gem of a Calgary library still makes me stop in my tracks every time to just take it in for a moment.
Shot of the Central Library in Calgary, looking up from the third floor. Library building has a unique design, an elliptical shape with corduroy pattern of many warm wood slats leading up to a giant oculus skylight.

This Calgary Herald opinion column's metadata is making the headline on Google Search show up as, "Calgary's Bike Lane Agenda Will Bankrupt Us". A subtle way news orgs set out to achieve different reactions from their audience. #cdnnews #yyccc calgaryherald.com/opinion/colu...

And here's examples of national coverage. So, local news seems to appeal to consumers and small businesses, while national coverage focuses more on the strike action itself, or the terms of the dispute.
Screenshot of Google News results for National coverage on the Canada Post strike. Headlines from Global News, Toronto Star, the Globe and Mail read, "Canada Post strike talks continue but 'lot of ground' remains," "A 'lot of ground' remains between Canada Post, workers as strike talks progress," "Canada Post's growing part-time, temp workforce a key part of labor dispute with union," "Canada Post says 'parties remain far apart' as strike continues," and, "Morning update: inside the Canada Post labor dispute".

It's interesting to see how local news is talking about the Canada Post strike versus more national coverage. Here's an example of Alberta and Ontario local news coverage served up by Google, which shows up based on your location:
Screenshot of local news results from Google. Headlines from CTV News, CBC, and Global News read, "How the Canada Post strike is impacting rural communities in Alberta", " Calgary businesses react to Canada Post strike", and " Canada Post strike impacts will be felt in Calgary." Screenshots of local news results from Google. Headlines from Mississauga.com, CBC and CBC read, "What you need to know about accessing services in peel region during Canada post strike," " Small Toronto businesses say they're already losing sales since Canada Post strike began", and "Toronto shops report fewer online orders since Canada Post strike".

In the last year I've enthusiastically leaned into film and TV, finding I'm fascinated by the backstories of what it takes to produce them. But now I've found out I have to live for over a millennium to watch it all. At this rate I'll never finish, a real problem!
Screenshot of a Google result that reads, "So, you'll lose ground every day from the start of this endeavor. Even if you ignore new stuff, according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), there are approximately 577,000 feature films. Assuming an average runtime of two hours per film, that's 1,154,000 hours of feature films or slightly over 1317 years. Apr 26, 2023 https://binge.quora.com > Can-l-w... Can I watch every single film/TV show around the world in my lifetime"

Devastating to realize that my family's hot sauce of choice—Sambal Oelek, the far superior mature sibling to Sriracha—is also made by the same company as Sriracha, and that the shortage means all their products are out of stock.

If Threads and Mastodon will be interoperable, what does this mean for Bluesky? It'll be a draw to bring the two worlds together, where you can choose to be within the safety of Mastodon but still interact with all of your more normie buds. Suuuuuper interesting.
Screenshot of article linked in previous post. It reads, "When Threads adds federation, will I be able to communicate with people there?

We expect that eventually Mastodon and Threads will be interoperable, and from a technical standpoint, users will be able to follow each other and exchange messages. However, it is up to the operator of the Mastodon server you’re are using to decide whether to allow communication with Threads or not. If you are not happy with their decision, you can move your account to a different Mastodon server while keeping all of your followers. Since Mastodon is open-source, you can even host your own server and be entirely in charge."
