Psychedelics may stimulate connections across neurons, changing how brain networks communicate. Some scientists believe this contributes to new ways of thinking, seeing, and feeling. Learn more in our exhibition, “Psychedelics: Art. Culture. Science.” On now until Dec. 06.

How do psychedelics impact the brain? There are a few leading theories, and Dr. @manojdoss.bsky.social (Associate Professor, The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School) explores one of them here.

A photo of a museum gallery featuring 3 marble statues. In the foreground is a headless Aphrodite - the statue depicts a female form draped in transparent fabric. The head and arms have been lost. In the background, a marble bust of a man, Thucydides, stands on a plinth. Next to it is a marble woman's torso, without arms or head, and legs that terminate just above the knee.

Woman’s outer robe with pine, bamboo & plum design (Japan, c1700-1750) @romtoronto.bsky.social
Museum description: Woman's outer robe (uchikake) with pine, bamboo, and plum design around 1700-1750, Japan
Silk rinsu damask with shibori resist-dyeing, embroidery, and padded with cotton wadding
ROM 949.49 Gift of Louise Hawley Stone
This outer kimono was likely worn by a bride.
The garment is covered in pine, bamboo, and plum patterns for good luck. The raised textures all over the soft, silk fabric are created with embroidery (green and gold threads) and shibori tie-dye (clusters of fine dots).
It is possible this garment was handed down from mother to daughter through generations, and that the fine, textured details hold and evoke memories of all the celebratory occasions when it was worn.

Me: orange silk with mostly pale pinky yellow embroidery, draped over a headless mannequin to show it as worn, back to the viewer. Displayed against an orange wall with a pattern of yellow lights reflected in to the wall behind

Ouch! The woman in this print is in the process of getting a tattoo. The look on her face lets us know that the pain is so harsh she can’t help biting into the towel in her hand. The textures on the towel + the woman’s kimono were created by using fabric in the printing process. #WorldArtDay
