Looking for a reliable disposable or reusable respirator during smoke events? Visit our fundraising store at buymask.ca. Need free masks? You can submit a request through our Request Program at donatemask.ca/request #Wildfires #WildfireSmoke #MaskUp #AirQuality
Photo of a man wearing a white N95 respirator. He is looking at the camera with a serious expression. "Did you know? If you have to be outdoors when the air quality is poor because of wildfire smoke, a well-fitted respirator type mask (e.g. a NIOSH certified N95 or equivalent) can help reduce your PM2.5 exposure. These fine particles pose the main health risk. By contrast, regular face coverings such as cloth masks and surgical masks will not keep you from inhaling the particulate matter in wildfire smoke. IMPORTANT: Respirators do not reduce exposure to the gases in wildfire smoke. If smoke is present for more than a few days, stay indoors when you can. Donate A Mask Canada, donatemask.ca"

Your regular reminder that the litmus test for integrity and due diligence in medical leadership is their willingness to admit and remedy their failures. One who will not address their errors RE airborne transmission of COVID is negligent, dishonest, or both. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/19/s...
Lost Lessons
Dr. Green was echoing the words of William and Mildred Wells, a husband-and-wife team who discovered the threat of airborne germs in the 1930s. They famously protected children in Philadelphia schools from a measles epidemic in 1940 by installing ultraviolet lamps that disinfected classroom air.

“I believe that a provision of pure air for children (and adults) to breathe should be looked upon as of equal importance to the provision of pure water and pure milk,” Mildred Wells later wrote.

But she and her husband failed to sway their colleagues, and the threat of airborne germs went underappreciated for generations. When Covid hit in 2020, the World Health Organization emphatically stated that it was not airborne — which turned out to be wrong.

Canada's infection control establishment has put out its version of a Pandemic Preparedness Plan. It does not contain the words "aerosol", "respirator", or "N95". 🙄 While acknowledging the need for a precautionary approach, it equivocates on airborne transmission... www.canada.ca/content/dam/...
It is important to adopt a proactive and precautionary approach when dealing with respiratory pathogens, particularly in the early days of a potential pandemic when key characteristics may still be uncertain. Planning should assume the possibility of efficient transmission through the air to ensure timely and effective response measures while critical information is being gathered.
