Afterimages offer insight into how the brain maintains visual stability across eye movements, revealing that perception closely tracks but slightly underestimates actual eye shifts. doi.org/hbsjgx

The ghosts we see: Afterimages provide clues to how our brains perceive a stable environment
Our eyes alone do not provide us with a continuous and stable view of the world. They jump several times each second in rapid movements called saccades.

Lawful kinematics link eye movements to the limits of high-speed perception
Nature Communications - Saccadic eye movements sample the visual world, but the retinal motion they entail goes unnoticed. This study shows that lawful saccade kinematics predict motion visibility,...

"Lawful kinematics link eye movements to the limits of high-speed perception" finally out in @natcomms.nature.com! We started this work back in 2016 when Eric Castet & Tamara Watson visited my (then young) lab. This work is close to my heart & supported by a @erc.europa.eu Consolidator Grant. A🧵 1/n

2/n Sven Ohl, Martin Rolfs (@rolfslab.bsky.social), and I investigated how intention modulates awareness of one of the smallest human actions: microsaccades—tiny eye movements typically generated spontaneously during fixation.
