As said on that other app I plan to be like Garp's wife - a reader, not a writer. But I likely wont be able to restrain myself ...

Not me, but back in the 70s my older cousins took their three little kids to see Grizzly, thinking it was a Gentle Ben Disney type of movie. When the camper's severed arm landed in the middle of the campground they all knew it wasn't.

Thanks! I had heard of that also satisfying story - in fact I was reminded of it, though I couldn't recall the details or the jerk's name, when reading about this case in India - but it's worth revisiting when you want a bit of justice finally served.

What a story! For the reasons given it took way too long to put an end to his crimes but those women finally got to deliver him a fitting comeuppance if ever I heard of one. And it was great how they all stuck together like Spartacusses. I didn't know about this incident so thanks for the link.

I'm reading a biography of writer Elspeth Huxley and at one point before WW2 she is studying in New York and working part time as a waitress and it says she was earning $3.50 an hour, which seemed like a good wage and not that much less than what some earn now and this was like 80 or 90 years ago

She was terrific wasn't she. That bit where she is told X is dead and misunderstands who is being referred to and how she initially reacts sticks in my memory.

Yes it's an excellent movie, along with Maurice, Howards End etc - all those period pieces from that era. Another good one, though sad, is the film of Waugh's A Handful of Dust. Having said that, as romantic as the kiss is, had I been Helena I'd have been fluttering my eyes at that Italian coachman

As others have said, there's nothing mind boggling about it. I loved the 'big American road trip' me and friends did 20+ years ago but you couldn't pay me to visit the USA these days and no-one I know has any interest in travelling there. Beyond all else they've chucked tourists in ICE prisons FFS!

Their version is great but this one from the Australian TV show Rockwiz is pretty good too. The show featured many terrific performances from local and o/s artists. Big praise for Like a Rolling Stone, Heart of Gold, Drove Old Dixie Down and many more. Lots on youtub www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIdp...

Blood Surf (2000). Has surfing, sharks and a gigantic salt-water crocodile rampaging around and eating everyone.

It's quite old and I don't know where it might be streaming or available but every kid I knew, and the adults too, loved the movie The Indian in the Cupboard.

I sometimes look back on the 'olden days' when you were travelling and met up with and travelled around with other travellers and then, when it came to a parting of the ways, you'd give them your parents' address back home as it was the only constant in your young person's life.

Ganges Plain, 1915 BCE, a bloke whose life expectancy was 27 and who most likely died of typhoid fever or dysentery, with a 51% chance of that happening before the age of 15. Makes my current life look positively rosy.

I read a lot of those posts and liked the ones where I liked your song choices. It's also why I followed you. But to be contrary, I think Luxury Liner is one of Emmylou's best: When I Stop Dreaming with Dolly, Hello Stranger with Nicolette Larson, Tulsa Queen, She, and of course Pancho and Lefty.

Songs like Gulf Coast Highway don't work nearly as well if the lyric goes 'He worked the oil rigs in the Gulf of America ...' Nah, doesn't work at all.

I only found out recently, from listening to PG Wodehouse audio books, that 'valet' is pronounced with a hard T at the end. I always said it in a 'French' kind of way.

I remember Arizona from when I was a kid. It was a hit here in Australia and I liked it way back when. This is your thing, but for B, Boulder to Birmingham would doubly fit the bill!

What's the Bette Davis quote after some Hollywood mogul died? Something like 'They say you should only speak good of the dead. He's dead. Good'.

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

Yes it's nauseating seeing praise for Dolly coming from people who act completely the opposite to her when it comes to how you should treat others. She kept out of politics but did a lovely version of Woody Guthrie's Deportees. The person you're talking about likely hates that song.

I hope that just maybe Dolly's passing will shine a light, in a way no speech could, on exactly what you're saying. The difference between her and 'them' is so stark, and them praising her so hypocritical given what they do to others, kids included, that they'll be seen for the cruel ghouls they are

Dollywood was one of the highlights of my American road trip 25+ years ago. It and the Carter Family Fold and Burning Man and Al Green's church: a musically eclectic journey! The Grass is Blue had just been released and I bought the CD at Dollywood. It and Trio will be getting some spins today.

I loved a book called The Wild White Stallion. It was just kicking around at home and I re-read it many times and because of it I visited the Camargue region of France many many years later. Also liked a series set on Romney Marsh but haven't made it there yet.

I saw a before and after photo and yep, all the detail is gone along with the beauty of the weathering over the years. Now all the 'life's' gone and they look like they came out of some cheap tacky mold. Artistically criminal as well as probably illegal in all sorts of other ways.

I need to track down the latest couple of series but I love the episode where Colin goes to confront the troll he's having an online fight with and it turns out to be a literal troll that lives under a bridge. Very very funny show, as is the original movie. 'We're werewolves, not swearwolves.'

Very enjoyable article and I'm glad you found your way to good country music like Guy Clark. I think my 33 and 1/3 would be on an Emmylou Harris album, with me tossing up between Luxury Liner or Wrecking Ball and probably opting for the latter because it was so different for her and country overall.

It's years since I saw it so I'm not sure how well it fits your criteria but I'll put in a vote for Sexy Beast as it's so good and Ben Kingsley is terrifying in it - even his old friends/cronies are scared of him.

Reminds me of when a friend, quite a big bloke, went off a diving board at a pool. He ran along the length, did a big bounce and ... shot nearly half the length of an Olympic-sized pool. It was 30 years ago and the look of surprised fear on his face as he flew through the air still makes me laugh

Was it the South Park film? Anyway, we're never going to agree so we should put it to rest. I think the red card was valid and you don't. And both our teams are out now anyway. I don't really want any of the four left to win though I guess I'd rather France or Spain than England or Argentina.

No, I don't, but the rest of his statement sounds supportive and there was no ambiguity about the other two's posts. There's no real 'proper channels' to follow. He got given a red, maybe fair, maybe not, but you wear it and bitch about it for years and let 'we was robbed' become part of your story
