Rohingya Refugee News: Malaysia Now: How to convert atrocity crimes into diplomatic capital: Displace millions of people. Agree to take a small percentage back. Get received as “President.” Get the guard of honour. Min Aung Hlaing created the crisis, then gets rewarded for helping to manage a fraction of it. video: Bernama

The Betrayal of Zafar Ahmad
How Malaysia criminalised a public advocate and the role of his own Rohingya community
021
Rohingya Refugee News (RRN) @rohingyarefugee.news · 04/10/2026
Zafar was never operating in the shadows. For years he appeared openly at official functions, met prime ministers, ministers etc, including Badawi, Mahathir and Ibrahim. He publicly represented MERHROM under its own name. Why has MERHROM’s lack of registration suddenly become a criminal matter?
172
Rohingya Refugee News (RRN) @rohingyarefugee.news · 02/10/2026
And the timing? He gets targeted right after publicly calling out government policies on deportations and evictions. Prosecuting a refugee for operating in the exact bureaucratic trap the government created isn't justice. No. It is pure retaliation. Free Zafar.

He’s being charged with running an "unlawful" (unregistered) group. Catch is, Malaysia literally refuses to register Rohingya groups. Zero have ever been approved. Denied legal status, then arrested for lacking legal status!

Malaysia calls it “ihsan” (compassion) and “voluntary return.” In reality, Malaysia handed thousands of names to the Myanmar junta, let the junta pick who it wanted back, and extracted signatures inside detention cells. www.rohingyarefugee.news/p/malaysias-...

Malaysia is putting people on a Myanmar Navy ship, UMS Moattama, and sending them back into the hands of the military they fled. Calling it “repatriation” does not make it safe. For anyone at risk of persecution, this is refoulement by sea.

From @chinhumanrights.bsky.social Despite an intense military campaign, Mindat Still stands. Between 11 April and 22 June 2026, CHRO documented: 440 aerial bombardments 168 sorties 91 bombardments in a single day 45% of all bombardments occurring within just four days #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
Mindat was one of the first places in Myanmar to rise up against the military coup. More than five years later, it remains one of the most enduring symbols of resistance.
Despite an intense military campaign, Mindat has not been subdued.
Between 11 April and 22 June 2026, CHRO documented:
• 440 aerial bombardments
• 168 sorties
• 91 bombardments in a single day
• 45% of all bombardments occurring within just four days
Many of these attacks involved Y-12 aircraft dropping unguided bombs on civilian structures across Mindat Township and surrounding areas.
The people have largely fled. The homes remained. The bombs kept falling.
These are not precision strikes. They are indiscriminate aerial bombardments directed at towns, villages, homes, churches, and other civilian structures in an apparent effort to achieve from the air what has proven difficult to secure on the ground.
Mindat’s significance extends beyond geography. It became one of the earliest places to openly defy military rule after the coup and one of the first places where local resistance inflicted a humiliating setback on the military. That history cannot be separated from the extraordinary scale of force being directed against the township today.
The continued bombardment of largely emptied communities and civilian structures raises profound concerns about collective punishment and vengeance against a population that dared to resist.
440 bombardments. One township. Mindat still stands.
