Great tit & Goldfinch - gouache and charcoal on canvas. Recently I asked my followers if they could send me their photos of dead birds, to add to my own collection, to paint. This is the first in the series! I finally have my website up and running and have posted this for sale on there.

Been thinking about Jason Arday and the ableism aspect (obv racism is a big part). How people couldn't grasp that an autistic black man could be academically successful. That he must either have been cheating, or lying about being non-verbal as a child.

Many of the happiest and healthiest elderly people I know are the ones who volunteered or started seriously engaging in hobbies when they retired. Humans crave purpose and enrichment in their lives! A universal basic income wouldn’t stop most people from contributing to society. Promise.

Seeing a lot of discourse on benefits, which misses the mark entirely imo. 'But PIP enables disabled people to work' 'but many people on UC work full-time'. Still placing a moral value on paid work. What about the many people who can't or don't work?

My local council are publicly patting themselves on the back cause they've planted some wildflowers next to the main road - which is great, but they've also been spraying glyphosphate along all the pavements in the area 🤷‍♂️

To get one thing straight, as I think will be coming clear to people in the UK this morning, that Supreme court decision doesn't just disadvantage women who are trans, it also disadvantages *all* women. We can now be questioned as to our gender, wherever, by whoever. Probably in whatever way.

if you’re an artist who ever thought “what’s the point? The world is Hell and I should do something that matters instead” even in an ICE detention center people will treat art as sacred, seek it out, and find joy and comfort in it. You aren’t making art, you’re making hope.

On her first day in the facility, Becky asked for a scrap of paper and a pen, and began to draw the inmates on the table next to her. She was immediately inundated with portrait requests. A Mexican woman called Lopez, who had a photo of her children stored on one of the iPads, told Becky she would buy her some paper and colouring pencils from the commissary if Becky drew her kids. She soon became the dorm’s unofficial artist-in-residence, with women huddling around the dirty mirrors to make themselves look presentable before they sat for her. They would decorate their cells with Becky’s drawings, or send them to their families. Lopez declared herself Becky’s manager. “She kept saying, ‘Becky, you need to ask for stuff in exchange. Ask for popcorn.’ And I’d be like, ‘Lopez, I don’t need anything.’ I thought, I’m here briefly, you’re stuck here a long time. I’m not going to take your food away from you.”

I was 18 when the Tories got in in 2010, since then I have been solely reliant on the punitive and dehumanising benefits system for income, and had naively hoped a Labour govt would make things easier for disabled people. But nope, not just more of the same - worse. #disability #uk
