🌱 Plant roots decide which way to grow much earlier than expected. #CIBSS researchers revealed how the SGR9 protein helps young lateral roots sense gravity & set their growth angle at a surprisingly early phase of development. 🔗 kurzlinks.de/yi3a #PlantScience #RootArchitecture

An album of over 200 pressed seaweeds arranged by an anonymous Victorian collector. A transcribed poem is pasted as title page, it begins: “Oh call us not weeds, we are flowers of the sea.” UW-Madison Special Collections. #naturalhistory #seaweed #pressedseaweed #seaweedalbum #herbarium
19th century book with a dark green cover and the words “Sea Weeds” in gold lettering on the front. The book is placed carefully in an archival box with tissue paper. Brown paper with four white cards pasted on top. Each card has a small pressed seaweed specimen. They are in shades of reddish brown and marroon. Light tan paper with three white cards pasted on top. Each card has a pressed green seaweed specimen. Open page in a seaweed herbarium album. The paper is tan with a white rectangle pasted on top. Inside the rectangle is a large pressed pink seaweed specimen. The opposite page is a bright blue paper.

✨ Paper spotlight ✨ Gravity sensing in plants nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... (🧵 1/6) This Tansley review explains how plants sense gravity to guide their growth. Wang et al. describe how the settling of starch-filled plastids trigger molecular signals that orient the plant.

There are two types of people in the world: those who discovered Persepolis and were richer for the experience, and those that still have to. RIP Marjane Satrapi. www.lemonde.fr/en/obituarie...

In the genomics era is easy to go “get the data first and worry about the biological questions later”, which is probably fine in the early stage of the project. But then too many teams went from “worry about the question later” to “completely forget about the question”.

Now on the Cover @pnas.org News, Delightful to see @akanshaganguly.bsky.social Journey from stress to regeneration, from leaf to root featured on cover. Akansha, you made it, very well done, congratulations.
Cover image: Pictured is a regenerating root from an Arabidopsis thaliana leaf. Akansha Ganguly et al. detached plant leaves to study the mechanisms of stress mitigation associated with wound repair. The authors found that plant-specific PLETHORA transcription factors activate the ATG8 gene, which initiates recycling of damaged cell components to decrease intracellular stress and allow stem cells to differentiate. ATG8 is not activated if the plant is simply forming a callus, rather than regenerating roots. The results reveal how plant-specific autophagy regulators interact with intracellular stress signaling to aid in wound repair. See the article by Ganguly et al., e2513954123. Confused writing is usually a symptom of confused thinking. As we struggle to clarify writing, we clarify our thoughts. AI writing aids rob us of that struggle, leaving clean-looking text and thoughts still confused for lack of inspection. Writing is not just a product; it is a diagnostic tool.
