The view down the viewfinder now it's all sorted. Less dust than it used to have, but not spotless. There's a demo of the exposure needle here as I move the aperture control around.

Getting the viewfinder assembly back together was a nightmare. It's all held together with spring clips, and there's loads of surfaces to get dust on. Definitely a test of my patience and eyesight! Must have had it together and apart again 25 times before it was all right and dust "free".
The viewfinder assembly on its own. Looks a bit like two old TVs sat next to each other

Here's the light meter setup that you see through the viewfinder. The silver needle moves to indicate the exposure level. The semicircle in front jumps up to block the needle if it's way too dark.

The ratchet spring in the lid gets pushed around by the two prongs on this arm when you advance the film. The ratchet teeth have worn down a lot, so bending those prongs open helps compensate a bit.

A bonus job while I'm here is to fix the exposure counter. At the moment it only counts roughly every second shot. There's a little spring ratchet thing, but it's gummed up with old grease. In the process of cleaning it I dissolved the paint for the legend, oops! So I sorted that too....

All taken with this lovely little Kodak Retinette 1B from ~1960. First film I've shot since I was a kid. Quite a few pics came out unusable, so I've still got lots to learn. I had a lot of fun with it though! :3

For years I've had to reach into this mess to swap from my work to personal PC, so I often just didn't and procrastinated stuff. Finally gave in and bought the KVM and cables. I want to throw some control stuff for the lab in here too at some point. Feels great to finally sort this!

Defibrillated some big batteries after they got over-discharged by their own charger... Had to fix the big supply to do it, which had let the smoke out after I turned it on to test it. Output load resistor is now heatsunk to the chassis to keep it cool.

Suit body drier for Flynn. My first TPU print. Keeps the suit safe and makes it tough against fursuit lounge handling! Also upgraded the old paw driers to take USB-C power, and added a hose adapter to help drying at the bean end. Wildly inefficient use of the fan but it works ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hurried pre-NFC projects. The Malmö cobbles killed our old trolley, so I threw together a few parts to make a compact travel setup. Works surprisingly well, but the wheels need some support to stop them kicking out when you hit big potholes. One to revisit before next year!

Experiment 2, now with a bit more care. Tried to make bridges vanish by elevating them. Unfortunately you have to get heavy with the paint to get it down the holes, then it wicks under the stencil. Also using radiator enamel paint on a cold day probably isn't wise...

Oscillator setup is a bit janky. They've got load caps slung on the bottom of the board. The crystal collection I bought from Maplin as a teenager let me down, no 1.842 MHz. We can steal the healthy clock from the good oscillator with a bodge wire for now

Turns out the clock can come from either an external input ‽, or from one of the 65C51 UARTs, used as a baud generator. News to me, but modems sometimes provide external clocks. I guess that makes sense if the line has lots of jitter?
Diagram showing how the clock input pin is connected by an analog switch to either the R65C51 as a clock generator, or from an external input via a MAX232Excerpt from the Fakerscope manual explaining some of the available clock configurations

NOTE: For SYNC mode operation this option should NOT normally be used. If this option is selected for SYNC operation a restricted number of Baud Rates is available. These are: 19200, 9600, 4800, 2400, 1800, 1200. A value of less than 1200 will result in a baud rate of 1200.

EXTERNAL - Disables the internal baud rate generator and allows the timing for transmit and receive data to be taken from an external source, i.e. a modem via pins 15 and 17 respectively.

SOURCE - Enables the internal baud rate generator to provide the timing for transmit and receive but in addition outputs the same clock onto pins 15 and 17 (TXC and RXC) such that some external device may be clocked by the same timing reference as the Fakerscope.
