How do plant organs stay smooth—or become wrinkled? 🌱 Our paper in @currentbiology.bsky.social shows how coordinated growth direction and mechanical properties across cell layers determine whether Arabidopsis sepals remain smooth or buckle. cell.com/current-biol...

How does a growing leaf stay flat? 🍃 Our new paper in @plosbiology.org shows that maintaining leaf flatness requires growth-rate coordination across the width of the leaf blade—not just between the top and bottom surfaces. journals.plos.org/plosbiology/...

Our foray into single cell and spatial transcriptomics led by Byron Rusnak in GenomeBiology. We found that DRMY1 is required for proper brassinosteroid-mediated coordination of sepal elongation, ensuring balanced growth between inner and outer sepals. link.springer.com/article/10.1...
WT inflorescence, drmy1 mutant inflorescence with irregular sepal size. Single cell umap plots showing clustering of different cell types in wild type and drmy1.

If life builds order from heterogeneity while never completely eliminating it, is heterogeneity merely a byproduct or could it be part of the means by which biological order is generated? Check out Lanxi Hu's review www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Check out our paper in the @PNASNews Special Feature: bit.ly/PNASpoly. We explore how stress induces polyploidy across fungi, plants, and animals, reshaping genomes, cells, and tissues through cell cycle alterations. Great collaboration with Don Fox and @annaselmecki.bsky.social.

We learned a lot about plant cell wall mechanics by stretching the Arabidopsis epidermis. Now published in ‪@natcomms.nature.com‬ Fibrous network nature of plant cell walls enables tunable mechanics for development doi.org/10.1038/s414...

DR5 is a favorite auxin reporter. In @natcomms.nature.com we show DR5 expression is stochastic, exhibiting both intrinsic and extrinsic noise. We put two different color DR5 reporters in the same plant and see stochasticity. Congrats Shuyao Kong, Byron Rusnak, and Mingyuan Zhu rdcu.be/emNVQ
