I'll be spending a week in Mexico City in November. Anyone have local reccs? museums? Pyramids to see? Beautiful parks? Anything else to know or be aware of? (public transit is good? safe? pickpocket prone areas?)

At the Utah Geo Survey, we've been debating which 7.5' quadrangles have the most surface area. We have our answer and it was surprising! This proxy for normalized relief put the western Tavaputz Plateau as the highest compared with other regions #madewithClaudeCode

Some acquaintances published a very prescient Op-Ed in the Salt Lake Tribune regarding Utah poor preparation for an upcoming earthquake, drawing strong comparisons to Venezuela - take a look! www.sltrib.com/opinion/comm...

Voices: Venezuela’s earthquake tragedy is a warning for Utah
In an op-ed, four Utahns write that the state “does not lack knowledge or expertise” in earthquakes. “What it lacks is urgency.”

I was curious to try @anthropic.com's latest model Fable on data retrieval, analysis and visualization. I tasked it with with pulling data on volcanics and intrusives across the colorado plateau, testing the hypothesis put forward by Best & Brimhall 1974; Tanaka et al. 1986; etc.

Question for scientists: I am making extensive use of Claude to help me with coding and also help me make figures. This is a very helpful given the fact that I never got into Earth Science to become a coder. If I'm open about my use of an LLM in the publishing process, is this a problem?

Relative elevation models are both compelling visualizations of fluvial systems but also frankly useful for geologic mapping of terraces or quantifying zones of potential flood inundation. Several years ago Open Topography coded up an method for using python to make REMs (see below) 🧵

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again. www.nature.com/immersive/d4...
This line graph illustrates the percentage change in agency staff levels from the previous year for nine major U.S. federal scientific and health organizations between the fiscal years 2016 and 2025. The agencies tracked include the CDC, Department of Energy, EPA, FDA, NASA, NIH, NIST, NOAA, and NSF. For the majority of the timeline between 2016 and 2023, the agencies show relatively stable fluctuations, generally staying within a range of +5% to -5% change per year. However, there is a dramatic and uniform plummet starting in the 2024–25 period. Every agency depicted shows a sharp downward trajectory, with staffing losses ranging from approximately -15% to over -25%. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) shows the most significant decline, dropping to roughly -26%, while the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) shows the least severe but still substantial drop at approximately -15%.

Although large earthquakes generates strong shaking over a wide area, this is somewhat mitigated by the rupture being offshore. But if the rupture breaks the ocean floor, it generates destructive a tsunami that can spread across the ocean basin in the hours that follow.

If proposal success rates are going to start looking like the probabilities of winning some money from lottery "scratchers", might as well just make grant money a lottery. Would save us all a lot of time.
