LNP's trying to pitch the immigration policy to the left of Labor's (which is to say basically the same except that he's noticed that destroying universities by banning international students will crash the economy)
Opposition says focus on skilled migration would benefit economy
By Brittany Busch
Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has insisted that the Coalition’s proposal would benefit the economy by focusing on skilled migration.
“If you have a temporary graduate visa or a student visa, on average, they’re going to give you $7000 to $14,000 of tax income and income economic contribution which is in line with that,” he said
Taylor said a skilled worker brings in $30,000 to the country.

In honour of his passing, the only Jeffrey Archer book I've ever read. Incidentally, in looking up the cover, I see that more recent editions completely replace the very good Derek Matthews illustrations... wonder what happened there.
Book cover to Jeffrey Archer's "Willy visits the Square World". Illustrated by Derek Matthews. The cover illustration shows an indoor bedroom night scene, with a young boy wearing a space suit, and a toy teddy covering his eyes in dismay.

I mean, this is art
Step 1 of the zoom: cyber-crotch, but out of focus. Beatty is in focus, wearing army fatigues. Step 2 of the zoom: more of the Cyberman's front-mounted gun, which he is clutching with one creepily human hand.Step 3 of the zoom: you can see part of the Cyberman's cloth-covered face now.Step 4 of the zoom: Mid shot of the Cyberman legs akimbo.

One of the most incredibly composed shots in Doctor Who history ("The Tenth Planet", from a YouTube recolouriser video). Why is that Cyberman standing like that? Hilariously the shot begins with a close-up on Robert Beatty in the background before it zooms out through the Cyberman's legs
Colourised frame from a 1960s Doctor Who episode. An original design Cyberman stands jauntily in the middle of the frame, legs wide apart with one foot on a box. Through the Cyberman's legs you can see a human, played by Robert Beatty, lying down but waking up and looking puzzled.

While designing and building this jewellery cabinet, I learned that the internal components that hold drawers in place (when they're not solid panels) are called web frames. Here's 4 that I made with half-lap joints on the table saw and boy are my arms tired
A set of 4 rectangular rose gum wooden frames, laid out on a bench. Each one is composed of 4 small wooden boards, joined by half-laps.

Coalition’s curriculum proposals about Australians ‘becoming proud’
By Nick Newling
The Coalition’s plan to slash units on Indigenous history and replace them with classes on Western culture in a rewritten national curriculum would provide a “broader perspective”, Liberal MP Dan Tehan says.
“[Students will] get a broader perspective of the types of values that have made our country, Australia, the best country in the world,” Tehan told ABC Radio this morning.

Also there's half of Dan's head at the bottom.

Second ever dovetail. This time, it's an actually functional joint, for all that it's a bit gappy on the tail socket side (on the right of the picture).
A more successfully cut dovetail joint made at the intersection of two off-cut pieces of hardwood. Still gappy but functional.

Sure doesn't look like much, but it's my first ever attempt at cutting a dovetail joint. The sawing went pretty well, but I fell down on laying out the joint and it was too gappy. Hopefully this is the worst one I'll ever cut.
Two small wooden boards, loosely connected by a very sloppy dovetail joint in the middle. The joint only has one tail and two pins.

Yeah for real the Bluesky CEO is really focused on making this place better for sports fans, the political stuff is genuinely an afterthought. He's not saying he wants to attract other kinds of politics, just other kinds of communities
Intervieer: Yeah. This is Jack Dorsey saying Twitter wants to be AT Protocol, not a product. Here we are, and that’s Bluesky in big ways, but it is also a product. People know what that logo means. Political pundits say “the Bluesky crowd,” and that signifies whatever they want it to signify. I’m just wondering if you want to break that branding in any meaningful way.

Bluesky CEO: Yeah, we want to expand it. “Breaking” is maybe the wrong word, but yes, we want to expand more and more so that Bluesky means not just one thing, not just liberal politics, for example. I will point to sports as an example from the last year. We’ve made a very concerted effort to bring on sports leagues and sports writers, and it’s worked really well. There are a ton of sports conversations now on the app, and those people come here for the sports, not for the liberal politics. It’s possible to expand.

In politics, it’s probably our hardest challenge because we have one type of user base there that’s very active. That’s good too. They are super active, and they’re very much at the forefront of politics and very engaged and very informed. But we can just keep adding more communities so that it balances out.

Yeah it's a fundamental misunderstanding of what they're for! This para in particular. No checks or balances means problems *never go away*
This is only one form of political risk, by the way – in days of yore, it was not unknown for people to physically resist infrastructure construction by chaining themselves to things. And equally importantly, when it comes to making investment decisions, political risk has all of the bad characteristics which people hate about legal risk. The risk surface is still there, it’s just that there is no process for managing it now, no judge to limit the number of times questions can be relitigated and no barrier to entry.
