@standupforscience.net makes it easy to stand up for science! We all must join the fight to make sure the scientific infrastructure that has improved all of our lives survives! If not for yourself, do it for your children and your children’s children. Losing ground in science means losing lives.

Congratulations to @cdelawalla.bsky.social who is one of the bravest people I know. As a graduate student she did not stand by but proactively stood up and founded @standupforscience.net and has been a champion for us all. We have a lot to learn from this remarkable young scientist.

Kudos to @cdelawalla.bsky.social for being 1 of just 5 ‘young scientists’ profiled as ‘on the radar’ in this @sciam.bsky.social piece. @standupforscience.net
Colette Delawalla
Emory University, Stand Up for
Science
Colette Delawalla's nominator says simply, "She is changing the field of science, particularly among young scientists, by showing them how to become participants in democracy." Delawalla, a clinical psychology graduate student at Emory University, has led a charge against cuts to science and the dismissal of evidence through her organization, Stand Up for Science.
Since early last year she has convened scores of people to protest funding cuts, promote political candidates who support science, and work with and within government to preserve the role of science in evidence-based
policymaking and the economy.

So-called “soft skills” include knowing how to ask a question, figure out how to answer it, gather the appropriate sources, analyze the information and decide on a viable answer and plan, almost always in collaboration with others. This is the heart of a liberal arts education, whatever your major.

The academic publishing system is broken. Academics provide the free content and labor to review and are dependent on this for tenure and promotion while private companies make the money! We have the power to change the system by changing criteria for hiring, tenure and promotion. #AcademicSky.
