Native American student enrollment at South Dakota public universities has returned to its pre-pandemic level, according to a new report. Black Hills State University in Spearfish had 227 Native American students during the 2025-26 school year, up 49 from 178 the year before.

One prominent Cherokee named Katteuha co-wrote a letter to Benjamin Franklin during the Constitutional Convention in 1787, urging him to push for peace between the Native people and settlers. Delegates to the convention "ought to mind what a woman says," she wrote Franklin.

The intaglio, a type of geometric or figurative drawing etched into arid desert pavements, resembles a fish and likely served as a sacred site for ancestors of the Tohono O'odham Nation. About 60 to 70 feet of the 272-foot-long intaglio suffered damage.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that Native Americans were only nomadic tribes. In reality, they built thriving cities with populations larger than some European capitals at the time. Cahokia had over 20,000 residents at its peak in 1250 CE. www.msn.com/en-us/travel...
