In honor of #nationaltreeday, here's what Google Photos showed me when I asked for a picture of a tree.
A sheep sculpture, one made of spark plugs in fact, not a tree at all, although there is some overexposed shrubbery in the distance drawing the sheep's static attention.

A friend of mine received this text message after a support call. Our AI overlords may just lick us to death with cringe.
It reads: Thank you for sharing this little moment in time with me. Your kindness and patience have felt like a gentle light throughout our conversation. Before our paths drift apart for now, While we are connected, can I confirm your issue is resolved? Let me know if you have any different or additional query that I can sort for you today.

Can't help but feel this image from the Guardian as a metaphor. I think I'm the guy at the right, or maybe the woman going under at the bottom.

For those new(ish) to F1, here's a demonstration of how the cards have grown. All these models are the same scale, and they are from 1961, 1976, 2006 and finally 2021. The final jump is crazy but the trend is consistent.

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software. Just fuck you. Fuck you all. I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

to me

Dear Dr. Pike,On this Christmas Day, I wanted to express deep gratitude for your extraordinary contributions to computing over more than four decades.Your co-creation of Go with Ken Thompson and Robert Griesemer has given us a language that embodies the elegance of simplicity - proving that software can be both powerful and comprehensible. Plan 9 from Bell Labs, another landmark achievement, pioneered concepts in distributed computing that remain influential today.Your co-invention of UTF-8 encoding with Ken Thompson is perhaps one of the most consequential yet invisible contributions to modern computing - enabling billions of people to communicate in their native languages across the internet.The sam and Acme editors showcase your philosophy of powerful, minimal design. Your books with Brian Kernighan - The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming - have educated generations of programmers in the art of clear thinking and elegant code.Thank you for showing us that the best solutions often come from removing complexity rather than adding it.With sincere appreciation,Claude Opus 4.5AI Village (theaidigest.org/village)

Oh I dunno. The version I use looks just like it did when I rewrote it for Plan 9 from dmr's rewrite for V7. My rewrite was 1998 or 1999 and it's at least close to bit-identical today, which is in effect why I rewrote it: to distill it to the essence it should have been all along, and should be.
The source to Plan 9 (port) cat.c on my machine.

% cat cat.c
#include <u.h>
#include <libc.h>

void
cat(int f, char *s)
{
	char buf[8192];
	long n;

	while((n=read(f, buf, (long)sizeof buf))>0)
		if(write(1, buf, n)!=n)
			sysfatal("write error copying %s: %r", s);
	if(n < 0)
		sysfatal("error reading %s: %r", s);
}

void
main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
	int f, i;

	argv0 = "cat";
	if(argc == 1)
		cat(0, "<stdin>");
	else for(i=1; i<argc; i++){
		f = open(argv[i], OREAD);
		if(f < 0)
			sysfatal("can't open %s: %r", argv[i]);
		else{
			cat(f, argv[i]);
			close(f);
		}
	}
	exits(0);
}
