I’m playing Silent Hill! For the original PlayStation! For the first time! www.twitch.tv/robotspacer #Twitch
The title screen for Silent Hill. It’s dark and bluish. Some objects are in silhouette in the foreground, maybe some street signs and some sort of support? In the distance, through the fog, a man is holding a flashlight. The title is in white letters, all caps, with a grungy weathered look and varying type weights. On the right side are photos of me looking at the camera, and an overhead view of my notebook, closed, with a PlayStation 3 controller on top of it.

New game dev post on Patreon: an overview of my Playdate adventure game engine. I explain the structure and include code samples to show how the game logic works. Also some illustrative GIFs, like this collection of pointer styles 👆🔍 www.patreon.com/robotspacer/... #PlaydateDev
Five different pointer styles shown next to each other. From left to right: a hand with the index finger extended, the same hand with a glowing white outline, an arrow pointing right, a magnifying glass, and a small watering can with an arrow in the top-left corner. In the upper-right corner is part of a text box, showing a prompt to press B to close it. In the bottom-left is part of menu, including options for “Look” and “Search”.

It’s an honor to have Transfer Point featured in the latest issue of Dank Zine from @agentannk.bsky.social! This issue is focused on retro Apple gaming, and includes an interview with me about my game. It should be available here eventually if you’d like a copy: dankzineshop.bigcartel.com
The cover of Dank Zine issue 85, featuring an illustration by AnnK. The illustration shows a classic Mac with a window that says “DIY means do it yourself.” Colors pour out of the display nad drip onto the desk. A curved lamp illuminates the computer and a sculpture of a face sits next to it. Text along the bottom reads, “Transfer Point, HyperCard Stacks, The Tower of Silka, Apple’s Biggest Failure. Dank art: AnnK, Chuboh, Maru.”The first page of my interview with AnnK. Large bold letters read “Transfer Point” next to a pixel art image of me. The Transfer Point cover art is in the bottom corner. The introduction reads, “Mike Piontek, known to Twitch audiences as Robotspacer, spent his stream focused on adventure and mystery games. Then he decided to make one of his own. The result, Transfer Point, is mystery adventure built entirely in World Builder, a 1986 Macintosh game creation tool that predates modern engines by decades, quirky variable naming, character limits, and all. What started as a quick community experiment, with the opening scene chosen by chat vote, grew into a fully realized story about memory, regret, and the strange ache of asynchronous communication. I sat down with Mike to talk about building a game in public, working within constraints of decades old software, and why he’s now porting the project to the Playdate.”Part of a page from the interview, showing some screenshots and illustrations. At the top is a screenshot of the game with the main character looking in the mirror. Below that is an illustration of the Lil Sweetie, a device that can be found in the game. At the bottom is a cropped screenshot labeled “Streaming Room.”A sheet of “Dank Collector Stickers” inside the cover. Several of them are emotes from my Twitch channel, including Garfield, a robot, a happy classic Mac, and Cedric the owl dabbing. The HyperCard icon, Apple logo, and Sad Cat are also included.

I seem to have made a series of decisions that resulted in drawing letterforms by hand in perspective. This is a good example of why I've only finished making two small games in the approximately forty years I've spent imagining I could make an entire game in my free time
Screenshot of Clip Studio Paint for iPad, showing a drawing of a library book drop in perspective. The relatively simple drawing is covered in a mix of 3D grids and hand-drawn guidelines.

I don't know about a template, but @golosogames.bsky.social made a box and manual for Spike II: The Great Emu War. The sizes are based on the original Famicom game boxes if I remember right. Seems like a nice size. I'm planning on doing a manual for mine but I haven't worked out any details yet.

I’d like to spend more of my time making adventure games! So I’m starting a Patreon where I’ll share more details of my work on Transfer Point for Playdate. The first post is available to everyone so you can get an idea of what to expect. Thanks for looking. www.patreon.com/robotspacer/...
A pencil sketch of the entrance to the library. The main elements of the original art are retained, in the same basic positions, but the viewpoint is more dynamic. There’s also a lamp post to the far left. The perspective is a bit high up, as though the viewer is very tall. The sketch is very rough, with many lines erased. In one spot the paper has been damaged. I wasn’t even pressing the hard, I don’t know what happened there.A clean, simplified line drawing showing a similar view of the library. The same elements are present, but the perspective is lower, making for a more realistic viewpoint of an average height person.A pixel art drawing of the same image. The line art is nearly identical to the previous version, but it has been redrawn in crisp pixels. Dithered shading, some subtle lighting, and additional details have been added.

I keep seeing* posts about The Lost Island of Alanna, but not its packaging, which frankly deserves to be seen. Most notable is the fact that it comes with two copies—”one for you, one for a friend.” The package is even perforated so you can tear the two sides apart.
The cover of The Lost Island of Alanna. It's a simple cardboard sleeve. The only English text is the title and "www.cherrycoke.com" in the corner. The background is an image from the game, which takes a lot of inspiration from Myst and Riven. There's a circular plate with a drawing and some text in another language engraved on it. Rivets surround the outer edge. On the rock wall behind it is some additional engraved writing. The image is very brown, with the word "Alanna" in tall, beveled red letters that give off a yellow glow. The inside of the packaging. The two halves are almost identical, with mirrored layouts. A prominent detail in the center is two thumb holes to pull out the discs from, with a deep red ring around them. Red text on either side says "one for you" and "one for a friend," with the words "two CDs" inside the ring. In the background are some documents and maps. There's also a screenshot of the game, showing a wooden bridge in an area surrounded by grass and tall cliffs. Two Cherry Coke logos also feature prominently. The text, duplicated on both sides, reads: "Discover the mysteries of a lost civilization. Explore The Lost Island of Alanna to solve the puzzle of this ancient people. But don't stop there. The pieces needed to solve these puzzles are not only found on the island. Clues await your discovery all around you. Websites, chat rooms, magazines and most of all Cherry Coke® bottles all hold valuable pieces to the mystery." Below that are the system requirements (a Windows 95 computer or a Mac with System 7.5) and the 1998 copyright. The back cover. It has a small version of the front cover in the top-left corner. There's a white square for a stamp in the top-right, and a larger white rectangle at the bottom. A printed return address reads, "6514 Jimmy Carter Blvd. Norcross, GA 30071." It's unclear if this design was meant to accomodate mailing a copy to your friend, or if the Coca Cola Company mailed out copies of the game. The CD. The left half has a deep red background with the game logo, a Cherry Coke logo, a QuickTime logo, and brief installation steps. On the right half is a map, printed in black outlines over the reflective disc surface.

Great write up! I love that the layering system took some inspiration from King's Quest. As a kid I loved learning about that system in Donald B. Trivette's The Official Book of King's Quest.
A photo of my copy of The Official Book of King’s Quest: Daventry and Beyond by Donald B. Trivette. The King’s Quest logo is at the top, and small images of the first three game covers are along the bottom. There’s also a prominent note that it includes a forward by Roberta Williams. The cover has a prominent yellow border. The last page of the book, showing two debug mode screenshots of King’s Quest 4. The graphics of the fisherman’s house are replaced with colorful outlines of objects in the scene. The top caption reads, “The control lines that govern where characters can walk are invisible in the finished product, but can be displayed with the debugging commands. (Photo courtesy of Jerry Albright)” The bottom caption reads, “The priority bands appear as different colors and determine whether an object appears in front of or behind another object. Nothing may appear in front of white, which has the highest priority. (Photo courtesy of Jerry Albright)”

I've played this a lot but I had no idea it had such an incredible box cover. Mouse Stampede is a fun Centipede-like for Mac, released in 1984, where you play as a mouse (computer) fending off mice (animal) while various other things like shopping carts and turtles come across the screen.
The Mouse Stampede title screen. This is the later 2.0 release published under the name A Herd of Walruses. Game by Jason T. Linhart, art by Walter and friends. Image from MobyGames. The Mouse Stampede game screen. A computer mouse can be seen at the bottom, controlled by the player. The screen is covered in pieces of cheese, and a line of mice (the animal) are making their way down and across the screen. Some other creatures are scattered about, including several cat faces and a turtle. Image from MobyGames.

Screenshot of The Last Express, showing two women seated in the dining car of a train. They’re wearing brightly colored clothing and lovely hats, and they’re drawn in flat colors over a 3D-rendered background. On the right side are photos of me smiling, and an overhead view of my notebook.

Screenshot of the Mac OS System Settings app. It shows a small image of what Apple calls "AirPods Max", with the text “Mike’s Big AirPods” next to it.
