today's game of "spot the AI marketing copy". it's Ovani Sound, by the way.
AI marketing copy:

"HERE'S HOW IT WORKS

When something good is coming, a new pack, a flash sale, a limited offer, the *VIP text list hears it first*. Sometimes hours before email. Sometimes before it goes public at all.

By the time it lands in everyone's inbox, VIP already had the jump.

*No spam. No daily noises". Just first access when it actually counts.

Get on the list. Skip the slow lane."

whoever at epic designed this genius way of viewing a page on the fab store from the unreal launcher. i mean. ooooh. i just want to shake them by the- well, let's start with wanting to shake them vigorously and go from there. we went from dogfooding to dogshitting, didn't we? details in alt text.
A screenshot of how Unreal Engine launcher users access the Fab.com store by default inside the Unreal Engine launcher - which is where all our assets are. Hark! at the fact that clicking on a page doesn't take you to an asset page, but instead pops up a narrow modal on the right where you can imbue next to no information without scrolling down all the way because it's condensed all the information into a narrow modal! See those three symbols on the top right? Well, just to save you time, the right two do the same fucking thing! Yes, that's right, close and collapse have no functional difference! Because why the fuck would they. No misclicking for you! No, because all OUR buttons have exactly the same purpose! And don't you worry, game devs! Because if you thought it was a pain having TWO buttons doing exactly the same thing, here's what happens when you click into a screenshot! That's right, now you get NO buttons? How do you get out? Great question? Apparently you just click fucking randomly until it closes or something, because there's no good reason for it to work, and work consistently, right? We don't need consistency in UX design. No, what we need is to throw crumbs to all the people who used the old store FOR A FUCKING DECADE and who asked very nicely for it to go back to how it was an be usable in the launcher. Which, to be fair, they did. But in what could only be described as an Epic fucking power move, they took it upon themselves to make it one quarter as functional as it used to be!

okay here's some gamedev. a non-post-process shader in unreal engine that can highlight only the visible part of clipped objects. uses custom stencils and scene depth comparisons to do it. normally you'd do this in post-process because when objects are rendered you don't know where they are.

bro is fuckin eyeballing that toast.
a void cat in his pink fluffy donut basket which now is permanently on my desk. in the foreground there's a metal tumbler and a white plate with a piece of toast with jam on it.

the void cat is staring at the toast like he wants it, like he likes it, like he knows what it tastes like even though he's never going to get it and wouldn't like it even if he could.

i lost a third of my desk to an experiment.
a little void cat sat in a big pink fluffy bed, on the desk of a game developer. there's the edge of a monitor, a stream deck, a keyboard on the desk, with a colourful desk mat and some audio equipment in the background, as well as two keyboards on a rack behind the cat.

not seen: the audio equipment i moved off the desk to see if he'd prefer being on here with me and calm down a bit.

here's some slop made copy i got in an email from @gog.com. if you're in marketing, you should be writing copy. not having a bot do it. for a platform with negligible market share, you need to put effort into communicating with customers. not have a bot do it. 30% cut for this GPT ass shit.
image of GPT slop made email subject line from gog.com. it says "This is more than nostalgia. This is impact." followed by two emojis. the form "This is [negation of] x. This is [y]." and over-use of emojis is a clear and known tell that AI has written something.

i've been disliking twitch lately. this woman beat a puppy on stream. horrific. was arrested, charged with animal cruelty. banned on twitch. and is now back on twitch. still a partner. do you hate this too? twitch only care about money. if you stream, disable midrolls and push people to patreon.

Epic's new developer assistant for unreal engine refuses to tell you if it's AI. Because telling you it's AI would be bad. Merely knowing it's AI, but not knowing what model it's based on, its training provenance or where it gets its information - that's fine. This isn't the future of gamedev.

every time i see this in my sidebar i unfollow the streamer. doesn't matter who it is. paying for twitch turbo to remove ads means that i should get no ads. i like being able to support streamers with turbo. but if i get ads anyway. then i may as well just cancel turbo and use adblock, right?

this is the part that stood out. we lost twitch a few years ago to branded content. the advertising push, then partner managers disappeared, then sponsored streams started getting promoted in the sidebar, then push notifications for ads. there's more. but twitch is now a dedicated vehicle for it.

twitch has always allowed anyone to download your clips but they now reward them for uploading it directly to other platforms. i'm not following this person. they have social sharing disabled. but i can upload it to yt and attribute it to them on twitch. twitch don't own your content. you do.

things to note: - Gameplay Ability System settings are slowly moving from C++ to both project settings and blueprint exposure. - Substrate materials are now out of experimental and into beta. Unreal shaders are closer to BSDF in substrate. - RT bloom looks insane.

it worked, by the way. this upgrade is fussy about assets linked to uninstalled plugins. i had to clear out unrecognised asset types. i have no idea what happened to make it look like everything is wrapped in clingfilm though.
