That wraps up our first custom rules match. Just swiped every dial to the right (inadvertently nerfing kings and also making a lot of specialists laughably useless). Basically anyone who got an Admiral/Tycoon/Tinkerer had everyone at their mercy. Fun experiment, at any rate.

this game has truly gone off the rails (as I'd hoped)

a screenshot of Subterfuge. You can see the overlapping sentry ranges across the upper-left corner. At the top of the screenshot is Serenity, held by Olive (Joe). It has 355 subs on it. Directly south of it is El-Farolito, occupied by Beige (Nick motherfucking Capozzoli) who is streaming a maddening series of attacks, 6 subs at a time, almost precisely 10 minutes apart.

And, as a delightful bit of whimsy in this unhinged tableau, we have a single driller departing Serenity to another outpost. It has been renamed by Joe to have the laughing while crying emoji as its moniker, which appears below it in the game.

It feels as though perhaps, in this hellish intertwining of undersea violence, one soul has found freedom, peace, and perhaps a little joy (at least until it dies upon the shields of Nautilus).

Subterfuge has restored the ability to export videos of completed games (it was barely functional and only on iOS before). Seems solid.

As a kid, Wolverine probably got me into comics, but outside of a couple bits and pieces, the only story that really left a lasting impact was Bill Sienkiewicz's Inner Fury, a complete fever dream of a comic. Mostly thinking about this thanks to the game reviews.

By the time I pull the ammo clip out of his ordnance – a little distrust never hurt no one, especially me – Big’s cutting wood, a profiteer’s smile on his dreaming face. It takes a lot longer for me, and when it comes it brings visions of locked cages being rattled from within. Now, it’s more than just violence bein’ set loose from down deep. It’s inhuman.

Inner monologue:
Nightmares ridin’ hard through my psyche – saddled down with my own hurt – and the
greater worry a’ that kinda agony comin’ down on anyone else. Dark visions, full o’ menace, shot through with metaphor. Influenced by both pain and pop culture. Born out of ravaged corpuscules and classics illustrated.
A page of Wolverine dreaming he’s Captain Ahab in Moby Dick. He poses heroically on the deck of a ship with a spyglass to his eye. Rain streams down and his eyeball protrudes from the end of the spyglass. Wretched masses huddle and cling to his feet. He holds a harpoon. Wolverine: “Hast seen the white whale?”
In the distance, a large whale-worm like creature crests the waves, holding a sign with a silhouette of a chicken on it for some reason.
In the final panel of the page, we see Wolverine’s face directly, spyglass still in place, his eyeball comically large in the glass. Behind him, the masses peer over his biceps as he grips his harpoon. His face is almost a caricature, mouth twisted in madness and expectation in equal measure. A lot of great mouth work in this book. Wolverine: “He infects me and I shall have him!”
(There’s definitely a bit of ~subtext~ throughout this book, which came out in like 1993)

Alright, this might be my patch note/update in quite some time. This is from the latest update to Chaos Front (a very good game that I like an awful lot):

"In this game, we play as mercenaries. The protagonists can actively work to solve problems and help a faction achieve victory. Or they can drift with the current, hopping between factions purely for the rewards. But mercenaries without ideals will ultimately let the world slide toward ruin, and they will never be the protagonists of history. Even though many of you disagree with this design, I won't be changing it."

I spent so many lazy Sunday afternoons locked in on EGA Trek and I think Deck + Conn does a fantastic job of capturing that game's whole vibe and crossing it with Silent Hunter.

The first planet I landed on at the start of the Chaos Reign campaign in MW5: Mercs had a Catpult C3 for sale and it felt like getting a kiss on the forehead from the dice gods. Naturally, I upgraded it to the best of my abilities to the equivalent of the C5 variant.

My in-laws got me this as a birthday present and I really can't recommend it enough. It's a well-sourced examination of line infantry in this era that works to dispel the fantasy that these troops were simply automata ruled by fear as opposed to a looser/more negotiated kind of authority.
