@newrepublic.com Thanks for bringing this to the forefront, I hadn't heard about it, but also this article is from July... Is there any update on this? Or are you just reposting to bring more (much-needed) attention to it?

Will these be for eating or just for funsies? I know the white ones are edible but thought the pumpkin ones were ornamental.

Earlier this year, Tucker Carlson said that “the defining fact of our lives is that whites around the world are being eliminated.” Journos who don’t watch his show are helping his effort to rebrand so he isn’t a liability for his protege JD Vance’s 2028 run. www.mediamatters.org/jd-vance/tuc...

Every single year I look at the jungle of maypop fruit in our yard and think.... Surely they can't be as unpleasant as I remember. Surely with such a bounty, I can figure out SOME way to enjoy eating these. Every single year I am proven wrong. Welp. At least the pollinators love them.

Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
Nature Neuroscience - This study shows that the brain arises from two distinct progenitors: one forms the forebrain and midbrain, whereas the other generates the hindbrain. These insights enable...

Just curious if these completely distinct progenitors might have some significance for understanding the huge diversity and many subtypes of glia too!

None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I don't know about developmental bio, but I remember astrocytes and oligodendrocytes come from the same stem cells as neurons. Do you know if they derive from one or the other of the distinct cell lineages yall found, or do both develop some glia, or do the glial progenitors split off even earlier?

OH FANTASTIC the very person who might know the answer to this! First, congratulations and amazing work! I hope to give it a thorough read-through this weekend but I have a question...
100
None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Got it! I'll have to refresh my knowledge of developmental neuro or harass my more knowledgeable lab mates on that one. Thanks for explaining! After starting to look into this I can say with confidence that microglia aren't from either brain, because they are in fact from the mesoderm. Freaks.
110
None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Huh. That's.... Extremely wild. Do you happen to know if both these populations developed glial cells too? I can't remember offhand where the different glia are generated, except the vague memory that microglia are very different from the origins of the astrocytes/oligodendrocytes

Fair enough, that's huge on its own! Is the "two different organs" thing hyperbolic press release stuff, or is that actually a reasonable way to describe it, assuming the results hold up?
210
None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I also don't understand why distinct developmental lineages would make it "two organs"... From my naive developmental-ignorant perspective, I assumed most organs had cells from multiple lineages.

None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
What is mean is, we already knew that there's a big difference between neuronal subtypes in the cortex vs the brainstem and cerebellum. It's neat to learn why and it'll help guide research techniques, but I don't understand why it changes our overall understanding of the brain.
210
None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
This is extremely cool but I struggle to understand why the implications of this would fundamentally change how we think of the brain, versus other distinctions between cell types during development. Can anyone help me understand? Genuinely interested, not shit stirring I promise!
110
None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Squints This seems incredibly significant for developmental biology and organoid research and anything using neural cell culture as a model! But like. There's already a ton of different cell lineages in the organ we call the brain, right?

None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Sounds like she got really lucky with that. No luck looking for info on a particularly deadly outbreak in post-war Japan, but in checking it out I did see that shortly after 1947 they researched giving kids GG shots as a short term preventative for both measles and polio.

None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Thanks for sharing this story... So glad we have a vaccine today. 4 out of 5 kids dying is insane though, do they know why the death rate was so much higher in that population? Not trying to downplay the seriousness of polio, one polio death is too many I'm just shocked and curious.

And to be clear, more undetected outbreaks wouldn't contribute to our feeling that there's a million recalls this year. Because they would be undetected.
000
None Gender Left Beef @robot-wren.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
That's a good distinction. I do wonder if there could be more actual contamination incidents/outbreaks that are going undetected, but that would be almost impossible to pin down.

Surprising fact: We are actually NOT seeing more food recalls this year compared with recent years. What we’re seeing is an increase in the number of illnesses caused by contaminated food. This is the largest ever cyclospora outbreak & third-largest foodborne illness outbreak of any kind on record.
Number of food recalls by year
There have been 162 food recalls posted this year by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Agriculture.

Chart shows yearly food recall numbers from 2017 to 2026.

.... renamed OS Investigate, ships with 69 prewritten prompts that officers can select, review, or edit, and then submit to the AI. Officers can also input prompts of their own.

The suggested prompts sit in a cache of more than 450 files that WIRED found on Flock’s own website, served by its login pages to anyone who loaded them. The code describes 45 tools at the AI’s disposal, giving it access to plate scans and camera metadata, arrest records, case files, dispatch logs, ballistics results, and commercial databases that contain Social Security numbers, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, relatives and associates. Flock says it is testing the product with a small group of law enforcement partners and describes it as still in development, with capabilities that may not reflect what it eventually sells. A “workup,” in Flock’s terminology, is a one-command background check. It starts with a name and a date of birth and returns what the department’s records and commercial data hold: vehicles, prior listings as a suspect, and, on a second screen, relatives, phone numbers, and online accounts.

19 of the prompts describe hunting for patterns rather than looking up a record. 14 call for no plate, no name, and no description. The officer simply supplies a location, a window of time, and a behavior.

One group of requests asks for vehicles that visited three or more retail locations in a city in three days, or multiple banks in a week, or multiple gas stations between midnight and 5 am.

investigation was originally developed for The New York Times, where it underwent eight months of editing, multiple rounds of fact-checking, and independent replication of the underlying methodology. The piece had a scheduled publication date when requests for comment were sent. It was only after the Times reached out to the subjects of the investigation for routine comment that the Elias Law Group, representing the DCCC and DSCC, sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding the paper not publish. Although the paper's fact-checkers and legal department later cleared the piece before sending out a second round of requests for comment, the Times ultimately decided to kill the piece.3:27
a4democracy.substack.com
The piece was subsequently slated for publication at The Bulwark, where it underwent additional fact-checking, data verification, and legal review. When requests for comment were sent to the subjects of the investigation, lawyers representing the Progressive Turnout Project and Mothership Strategies likewise responded with legal letters demanding that the article not run.
From there, publication was repeatedly delayed. The piece cleared successive rounds of legal review. When I asked for a committed publication date after months of delay, The Bulwark conditioned publication on my accepting an extensive rewrite prepared by its editors that, in my assessment, removed key empirical findings without explanation, introduced claims contradicted by the data and fact-checking record, and presented the subjects' legal defenses as my own conclusions. When I declined to publish under those terms, the piece was released back to me.

It's increasing clear the primary uses of our surveillance state are not to prevent crime or to track down criminals, but to engage in criminal activity. Nothing about that should be surprising given the elaborate legal structures we have in place to create a culture of impunity in law enforcement.

it might be cool to learn something from this so we don't repeat the same mistakes
Sure, I suppose it is feminine-coded to not want a senate candidate who allegedly twisted an ex-girlfriend’s arm and shoved her into a bedroom and “held the door closed from the other side so she couldn’t get out, telling her to remain there until she was ‘calm.’” I guess it’s pretty girly to hear another ex describe him showing up at her house engaging in behavior she described as “reckless” and “unsettling” and imagining that there’s much more where that came from. Women sure are silly that way. Platner’s implosion is the natural culmination of a campaign motivated by a warped sense of masculinity, one that told voters to give their trust to a candidate who had done nothing to earn it. It has revealed that, for some progressives, the important markers of a candidate who displays “positive masculinity” are primarily aesthetic, with little concern for whether or not the man in question actually lives the values he presents. Platner and his team had so thoroughly convinced journalists, commentators and voters that they had outsmarted the trappings of traditional masculinity, only to come crashing down as a result of it.
