I suspect the machine that can teleport you to the mountain top will also be good at finding great base camps, near trails with medicinal plants, etc. Striving for the peak is not the only way to explore. Certainly the first to the summit is not the only one who finds the riches of the mountain.

Fun little reminder about exponential growth- there is no objective "knee of the curve" For example this is y=eˣ shown at different x values, with the y axis autofit.

The maximize-count-of-happy-people logic always read to me like one of those "proofs" that 1=2. Even if I haven't spotted it yet, I know there's a division by zero hidden in there somewhere.

I found a lot of the earlier rationality writing to be really helpful. Bayes Theorem, cognitive biases, etc. There have been some gems since that era too, but hidden in a lot of debris.

When that split happened, I thought it was some sort of mass test/demonstration of who is thinking for themselves and who is merely following. A decade later and they never pulled back the curtain with a reveal, so I guess they were sincere. I never understood.

I picked up Ace Combat 4 from a discount bin, and it's one of my all-time favorite games. I'm afraid to play any of the others, because I have no idea if the story was designed to be as mysterious as I interpreted it, or if that was just a side effect of skipping 3 games. Anyway, maybe I'll try 8!

I was an intern in 2008, and people just stopped retiring. That felt like the end of the conveyor belt was blocked so no one got off. This is maybe more like the front of the conveyor is blocked so nobody can get on.

In this context specifically, it'd mean leveraging AI tools more against fascism. Whether there is a shrewd leader subtly discouraging his opposition from using a tool seems very relevant for members of that group deciding how and how much to use that tool.

I wonder if there are any off by one errors in DNA, where the protein sequence looks like junk, but if you shift it by one, it starts coding helpful proteins. Would be a way to stash info away for rare events. Seems super useful, and I'd like to know if it's ever been investigated.

They're using Slack to send these alerts? Their human in the safety loop receives a Slack message? The enterprise messaging software? And replies via? Slack? This is simply not how safety is done in any industry that must take safety seriously.

For some reason, I imagine them still talking about nuances of cognitive biases, and interpretability over matrices, and such. That's silly though, surely they'll be talking about present threats, the latest models, benchmarks, qualitative performance beyond benchmarks, etc. Time to go check-
