I’ve pet friendly little swell sharks, stroked sting rays off Mo’orea, watched black tip reef sharks glide off into the murky blue, floated over sleeping nurse sharks, and swum side by side in huge circles with whale sharks big enough to swallow me whole. I’m still waiting to meet a hammerhead eye.

Last week at my school visit every grade, K-5, chose our picture book about the beached blue whale whale who became a museum exhibit. Not a fantasy. Not a mystery. Not an adventure. I’d never experienced a day like this. I think they’re craving emotional honesty and peace. It was an honor. 💙🐋💙

"Is it dead?” a kid asks… I’ve heard this question many times from kids on field trips to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History where it was my task to answer them. Today, this book, illustrated by @mattschu.bsky.social and published by Little Bee, hopes to honor their question honestly. 🐋
