August was about making AI tooling fit my day-to-day work. I experimented with agent skills, cloud/background agents and local models—and decided to pause the local-model rabbit hole for now. A practical month of seeing what sticks. robintegg.com/2026/09/07/a...

Context is king. The skill should have description of when to call it - 401 and give it the options. By default do this … unless prompted otherwise by the user. Let us know if you find or use a different pattern

If the repo is an application or similar maybe the skills are a good target. If you only have one skill for generating the requests put it there. If you have many, then put in a separate skill. Get specific with the description to help the agent find the skill.

Great question. In this case, there’s a few options. I might add a section to my instructions file, add a section to a skill or add a separate auth token skill. It depends on the structure of your project. If the project is just api testing then maybe an instruction will suffice.

Agents are useful for exploratory API work: derive requests from intent, contracts and live responses instead of maintaining Postman collections. I wrote up the workflow and where Postman fits. robintegg.com/2026/08/21/w...

This week I moved ai-toolkit over to the new VS Code agent plugin model. It aligned surprisingly well with where the project was already heading, and gave me a chance to add a new Javadoc Central plugin for Java development too. robintegg.com/2026/08/09/a...

Agents fail at stateful workflows not because they can’t call endpoints, but because they can’t tell if a call is valid right now. Hypermedia APIs publish valid next actions alongside current state. Less prompt engineering, fewer invalid transitions. Worth a look. robintegg.com/2026/06/03/h...

I’m thinking with my own code of having the plugin provide ootb skill like ‘mvn dependency:install-skill’ . Is this madness or is it better to let others build their own? I see a lot of people not engaging with skills and the like so they won’t get these nice touches until the models have the data
110
robintegg.bsky.social @robintegg.bsky.social · 28/05/2026
Nice feature. How are you going about getting this approach into your agents? A maven dependency skill? I have something similar to look up latest version when adding a dependency. Feels like more of these plugins need a way we can keep our agents up to date with their features and usage

It certainly might not be comprehensive. The journey with this agent is discovery so it’s natural to ask for more things to be discovered or deep dive into an unknown topic and ask it to update the discovery as you go

Thanks 🙏 as it’s in vs code, with the Discovery agent selected (not plan or agent mode) the chat window presents the discovery in the format prescribed in the agent file. Part of the feedback is to ask any clarifying questions.
