Great example for historic human-nature interaction creating landscape resilience, which we are missing nowadays.

It is astonishing how often, throughout history and across so many different cultures, death and sleep have been symbolically linked.

Truely amazing find. Wood was extremly important in the Mesolithic. It was probably more a Wood than a Stone Age. 😉

Villena, Vix, Albacete... Maybe we should consider whether museum exhibitions are the best place to protect priceless finds 🏺. Displaying replicas is also an option.

Monumental Roman inscription, found next to a Roman villa near Alt-Inden (D). Sabi(na) was one of the heirs (H = heredes) of the deceased, who according to testament (T) had to have the funerary column erected, to which this inscription presumably belonged.   🏺 #Archaeology, #EpigraphyTuesday
Inscription reading:

My new favourite excavation tool! Hess Metalworks were so kind to hand-forge some of these leaf trowels (Stuckateuereisen) for us. Far better than the floppy stuff from the hardware store.😍   🏺 #Archaeology, #CRM

To highlight from my POV: The hobby archaeologist stopped digging after he found several coins using a metal detector & called the Office for #Archaeology. That's why the hoard could be excavated properly. 👍

The Neanderthal cave site dating from the Middle Palaeolithic would also be an example of the re-excavation of an old spoil heap, albeit one dating from neither the Viking Age nor Ireland. R. Schmitz and his colleagues even found parts of the original Neanderthal skeleton (‘Neanderthal 1’).

A similiar experiment on the taphonomy of earthworks has been made in the Rhineland on loess soil in the 1970s by Lüning et al.: doi.org/10.11588/bjb... Maybe it was inspired by the Overton Down Experiment.

My colleague has made these beautiful window coverings from animal hide for our Iron Age house. They protect against wind and rain, but let some light filter through. I’m not sure if there is evidence for parchment-like windows in the Iron Age, but it’s a plausible idea. 🏺 #Archaeology
